Better Digital Photography Magazine-Free online

^kkart:iconkkart: reports, 1h 28m ago
From the Publishers of "What Digital Camera" and "Amateur Photographer", IPC Media today has announced a new online photography magazine, "Better Digital Photography" that people can read free and fully online, it is also interactive with embedding video tutorials from the magazine and mouse-over tips. Aimed at the entry and intermediate level photographer, it is heavily devoted to equipment and technique-focused photography content.

From the IPC Media website:

Publishing director Alex Robb says: “This is an exciting and innovative new venture for the photo portfolio. The editorial team have worked incredibly hard to create bespoke content, including technique videos and other interactive content. I am delighted that we have secured distribution to around two million photographers to ensure that as many people as possible benefit from the excellent tips and advice. Better Digital Photography is a further indication of how IPC continues to innovate in this competitive sector.”

Editor Mat Gallagher adds: “We wanted to create a product that helps the reader expand their knowledge, while being easy to use. It is thanks to the talents of art editor Steve Crabb that we have managed to produce such a visually stimulating and accessible magazine that surpasses anything else in the market place.”

My thoughts, this is downright awesome and VERY well done, it is like looking at an actual magazine, but the fact that it has videos embedded within for tips, tutorials, and techniques, make this even better! You can also subscribe for free, via email for upcoming issues, make personal notes within the magazine, and download a copy to your hard drive. GO GET IT!

Save the darkroom!

~Morda86:iconMorda86: reports, February 22, 2007
It has come to my attention that there are some upcomming changes on deviantart concerning classification of photography. Some of those changes will painfully hit many deviants like myself who like to upload photos to categories such as "darkroom" or "macro". Removing those categories saying that they are not strictly "subject-based " but more like "technique based" categories is total nonsense! As a darkroom photographer i think that there are times when the subject is less important then the techniqe. Not mentioning that the techniqe can be a subject itself! "If you have a macro photo of a flower, for instance, please move it to the Flowers and Plants category." But what if im not interested in other simple flower photos? What if i want to view only flower macros? And what will happen if want to view only photos that were made on film, developed and printed by other deviants? The only option will be to stick to clubs such as analogphotographers [link] or macrophoto [link] But many people (especialy those new to DA) do not know about such clubs.

"The Darkroom category has caused confusion for years and it's time to end it" Ok, but why remove? Can't it be redefined? If DA want's changes so much then maybe there sould be two main photography categories? "Film photography" and "Digital photography"?

I don't know, I'm very sceptic about those changes. Removing Macro and Darkroom categories won't help anyone... It's a serious step back DA!

Devious Comments

:iconzacharykane:
Maybe by splitting the photography categories first into two main groups of "digital" and "film", they could progress from there and make even more specific categories. Which under "film", they could keep the "darkroom" category, because I'm with you when you say that darkroom is more subject based than technique based.
:iconfuturowoman:
RIGHT ON!!! I concur 10000%!!!! :boogie: Thank you for expressing this important issue!

i completely agree!

i don't even see how darkroom caused any confusion though. how can you lump finished, worked on pictures in with a bunch of snapshots? anyone with a basic knowledge of photography KNOWS and UNDERSTANDS what darkroom photography is.
and a macro shot is something entirely different from a non-macro shot. they can't lump them all together either.

i don't like these changes >|

“If you love something let it go. If it comes back to you it's yours. If it doesn't, it never was.”
:iconequivoque:
process + light = subject

how could this be any less clear; i guess we need someone to illuminate the darkroom on da.

Agreed. Digital photography and film based photography are very different arts! Why remove one?

:iconleaf-lover:
The issue that the gallery directors have is that many people do not read the category descriptions properly. The macro gallery is full of a lot of close ups, but not macro shots. This means that the GD's have to spend a lot of time sorting out mis-cats for both the macro and darkroom section of the Photography gallery and I suppose they've just had enough.

I'm not saying it isn't a shame, but I can understand why they're doing such a thing.
