Recently I've seen a rant crying about how DARE dA remove their artwork, because EVERYONE uses lyrics and other copyrighted stuff (backgrounds, photos, logos, etc) in their art! The user complains they are being picked on, because obviously the dA admins must not care if so many things with lyrics are uploaded.
You know what else everyone else does? Run stoplights. Why? Because they think they can get away with it. And a lot of people do. There simply aren't enough cops to watch every light.
It's the same thing with deviantART. People get away with copyright violations all the time, because the admins can't check every single deviation submitted. But you know what? That doesn't make it right. A cop will give you a ticket if he sees you run the light, and the admins will pull your stuff if it's reported.
It doesn't matter whether you think it's right. You agree to abide by the rules when you sign up, whether you bother to read them or not. Whether you agree with them or not. I've drawn stuff that I won't upload to dA because it doesn't fit the rules. I don't blame dA for this, because I agreed to it in the first place.
Also, don't shoot the messenger! Sheesh. I've talked to other artists that have, in the past, politely noted someone with a copyright violation, along the lines of "You may not realize it, but you're not allowed to use [insert violation here] in your art on dA." Their reward for trying to be helpful and keep dA's artistic integrity up a notch is generally a nasty flame response.
So, in conclusion, if you have questions about whether or not your artwork is in line with the rules, read these faqs:
FAQ #157: Can I use things created by other people in my submissions?
FAQ #8: What does deviantART consider to be Art Theft?
Remember that by using dA, paid account or not, you are agreeing to their rules. Quit blaming the people who are helping dA keep the community to the standard it deserves.
Devious Comments
The simplest thing is to report copyright violations (FAQ #155: How do I report a submission which I think breaks the rules?) and not interact with the other deviant at all. Staff is usually very good about handling them, and its easier not to subject yourself to the personal attacks.

Long before I recieved my license to drive, I knew a spot sign meant 'stop'. I'd look stupid trying to argue with a cop that I weren't personally told that it were wrong to run stop lights. Copyright laws have been around much longer than DA, computers even, have been around. Stop pretending the laws just happened to came out of nowhere when you finally get caught.

Great analogy! I hate it when people do the "Waaaah. Evil dA took down my anime screenshots" journals and get replies from their watchers along the lines of "that's no fair because lots do it!"
Then of course there are the people who are old enough to know better who still think that Google Images = free stock art!

Epiphany: a sudden and powerful understanding of something previously misinterpreted.
I want to spawn epiphanies in every generation.
I am so glad someone wrote this. I am so sick of seeing people bitch and whine because they got caught breaking rules. Rules they agreed to when they signed up to the site. Oh, ofc, they probably didn't read the rules. I have to sit on my hands sometimes because its so tempting to write to each and every one that I see "If you don't like the rules don't use Deviantart".
