Every edition, I, =
azayii, will be interviewing a talented artist who specialises in photomanipulation.
For this edition, $
chix0r kindly agreed to do an interview with me.
What first got you started in photo manipulations?
After lurking around dA for a while wondering how the likes of `Wishmistress and *judith made such fantastic images, I bought a magazine with some tutorials for photoshop and was instantly hooked. I liked the idea of being able to use photographs and add things to them to create a completely new image. Recycling digitally, I guess!
What is your biggest inspirations when it comes to photo manipulations?
Mood swings and music, mainly. I tend to get ideas in my head and look for appropriate stock, but then sometimes in the process of this I will find another piece of stock which inspires a completely different image. I guess it just depends what kind of mood I am in.
What is the best piece, in your eyes, youve ever made, and why?
Once is my favourite because it was in my head for a while, inspired by a blackfield song of the same name. I took time in creating the details, and felt proud of how it looked when it was finished. Looking at it now makes me smile and I love the fact that ^kuschelirmel chose this particular image to design my journal CSS with.
What processes do you take when preparing and making a photo manipulation?
I'm not really a creature of habit when it comes to making images, but I do like to make sure that I have plenty of high res stock images. I use a lot of textures in my work so I spend time looking for resources which will bring some originality into the design.
Do you have any tips for other manipulators?
Always work in the highest resolution possible, so you can offer your images up for prints. Spend time experimenting with colours and textures in various types of blending - sometimes this adds a whole new vibe to an image which you have been working on. Communicate with other artists - I've learned lots from hanging out with people in various channels on dAmn, asking them how they achieved a specific technique, or taking part in collaborations.
Closing out with some $chix0r thumbs
