Better Digital Photography Magazine-Free online

^kkart:iconkkart: reports, November 26
From the Publishers of "What Digital Camera" and "Amateur Photographer", IPC Media today has announced a new online photography magazine, "Better Digital Photography" that people can read free and fully online, it is also interactive with embedding video tutorials from the magazine and mouse-over tips. Aimed at the entry and intermediate level photographer, it is heavily devoted to equipment and technique-focused photography content.

From the IPC Media website:

Publishing director Alex Robb says: “This is an exciting and innovative new venture for the photo portfolio. The editorial team have worked incredibly hard to create bespoke content, including technique videos and other interactive content. I am delighted that we have secured distribution to around two million photographers to ensure that as many people as possible benefit from the excellent tips and advice. Better Digital Photography is a further indication of how IPC continues to innovate in this competitive sector.”

Editor Mat Gallagher adds: “We wanted to create a product that helps the reader expand their knowledge, while being easy to use. It is thanks to the talents of art editor Steve Crabb that we have managed to produce such a visually stimulating and accessible magazine that surpasses anything else in the market place.”

My thoughts, this is downright awesome and VERY well done, it is like looking at an actual magazine, but the fact that it has videos embedded within for tips, tutorials, and techniques, make this even better! You can also subscribe for free, via email for upcoming issues, make personal notes within the magazine, and download a copy to your hard drive. GO GET IT!

Tips for Photographers

*lullacrie:iconlullacrie: reports, March 1, 2007
I've been interested in Photography for a while now, but only started taking it seriously in the last 6 months. So I've put together a little something for those wanting to know more about photography and its practice.

:star: Don't set your expectations too high, even if you are a professional. You cannot expect to get fantastic results if you are new to photography.

:star: Invest in a good camera. If you can purchase a camera that can be changed to Manual Mode. This gives you freedom over the Shutter Speed, Depth of Field and ISO. Automatic Settings are handy for snap shots but if you want to take a professional approach take time to learn how the Manual settings function. You will get better results from your photos and be able to achieve the correct lighting and focus that you hope for.

:star: Learn how to use editing software. This can be a photographer's best friend. You won't realise how useful it is until you also learn all the functions of the editing software (such as Adobe Photoshop). There are so many parts to it, but magazines such as Better Photoshop and Digital Photographer provide step-by-step tutorials so you will get the hang of it over time. I've been using Adobe Photoshop (6, 7 and CS2) over a period of about 4 years now, and I am quite comfortable with it (finally) but again don't expect it to be a piece of cake. If you want to learn how to use a program like this, then expect to be studying it hardcore. Remember that even some for the best photographers use Photoshop and all your favourite magazines and advertisements are Nazi's for the program.

:star: Although it is good to Invest in a Photography Course (they do these at TAFE which are very practical and also at Uni) you have to keep an open mind at all times. I have done NO study at all in Photography, so although a course puts a nice little dent on your resume it is not necessary to have completed one in order to take a photograph and have it look good.

:star: Practice Practice Practice. Yes we have all heard that before. But become best mates with your camera. Experiment with anything you can find. Take as many photos as you can, at different angles with different lighting, filters and changing the settings (if using Manual Mode). Even try using household objects. Try new things with clothing and make-up to create your own unique style. Keep every photo you take. You never know whether you will need it later on.

:star: Take time to browse through art and surround yourself with beautiful photography. This can be a huge inspiration and influence. Just make sure you don't purposely steal someone else's idea. If you see something you like, print it or cut it out and keep them all in a folder/notebook. You can refer back to them later if you are feeling uninspired.

:star: Lastly, don't give up on your dream. If photography is what you want to do, then don't let anything stand in the way of that.

Thanks for reading.
Happy Snapping.

Great tips. I can relate to the fourth one, about the photography course, because I am just now in Digital Photo 1 at my high school and can pretty much teach the class....the advanced class.

Good article! :w00t:

When deciding whether to buy a Nikon or a Canon there really is only one difference: a clockwise or counter-clockwise zoom. Choose wisely.
