Concept Art
Not to be confused with conceptual art.
Concept art is a form of illustration where the main goal is to convey a visual representation of a design, idea, and/or mood for use in movies, video games, or comic books before it is put into the final product. This is a relatively new designation popularized by artists working in the automobile and video games industries. This term has been in use since the 1930's by the traditional animation industry who was describing drawn or painted images which illustrate the look, feel, design, colors, etc...of the animated movie to be made. Concept art is also referred to as "visual development" in traditional animation. The term was later adopted by the games industry. These illustrations became necessary for developed visual properties.
In Illustration terms, concept art is a preminenary sketch of development tool, for use as a basis of the finished piece, thisis NOT the same as conceptual !
Some examples:
1.

3.
1. Fabulous concept art, you can see the artist working through diffrent processes and design ideas through these sketches!
2. You can see here the artist working on character and pose design.
3. Clearly a character design, with no hidden meaning and based purely based as a informative illustration to work on future art featuring the character.
(Please note that I am not belittling or naming and shaming any of these artworks, all are lovely - just misplaced, as are MANY others - the aim here is to give you the knowledge to place your art in the proper places - please, if you have any CONCEPT art, in the conceptual gallery - MOVE it, it will get MORE EXPOSURE and views/comments in the cartoons and comics gallery !)

Conceptual Art
Not to be confused with concept art.
Conceptual art is art in which the concept(s) or idea(s) involved in the work take precedence over traditional aesthetic and material concerns. In
some cases, Conceptual art may not entail any art object per se, but instead manifest solely as documentary evidence for an "art idea." In
other, less extreme cases, Conceptual art may involve the construction of images and objects in a manner that frees the artist from their traditional role as a maker of aesthetic decisions.
In Illustration terms, it lets illustrators evoke a special meaning behind their conceptual illustrations, they often have hidden meaning and symbolism in their works. Conceptual art conveys the artists special meaning or view/take as opposed to (concept art

which clearly show character or product design.
Some examples:
1.

2.

3.
1. Rather than just showing off some hats, the 'conceptual meaning' behind this illustration is
about traveling and merging yourself with the places you visit.
2. The hidden meaning in the heart and the mirror lead this to be deemed 'conceptual art'.
3. Lots of meaning behind this piece, the illustration isnt meant to be taken literally, but to illustrate the idea of Gluttony etc.
and now some gems from the illustration gallery this week:
If you see any amazing deviations in the illustration category that you think should be included in the next news, send me a note! - =
