As part of a series of interviews celebrating International Women's Week, I had the pleasure of interviewing =
mskate.
Can you tell me a bit about how you first became involved in graphic design?
My humble beginnings in the world of graphic design started years ago when I first got a copy of Paint Shop Pro. I grabbed a couple of stock photos and just started experimenting. From there I taught myself Photoshop and havent looked back since. Im continuing to learn new techniques and skills all the time. Art is a major passion and part of my life, I think I'll be 90 years old and still creating works of art.
What do you think are the biggest issues for women in the world today?
Equality. Womens rights, especially in areas such as abortion. Breaking stereotypical moulds that have been put in place by not only the media but society as well. Also the need to raise more awareness of health issues such as Breast and Ovarian cancer. Body image including issues such as Eating Disorders and the portrayal of women in the media. Last but definitely not least; Violence against women not only sexual assault but domestic violence.
Your gallery contains some deviations which are specifically intended to raise awareness of hard hitting issues. A Woman's World is one particular image which stands out for me. Can you tell me a bit about the making of this image?
Ive written on the subject of Sexual Assault and abuse before but this was the first time Id done something visually. I wanted to create something along the lines of a Community Service Announcement and that was the result. I wanted to present something very raw not only visually but emotionally too. I wanted to be a voice for those Women out there who feel like they dont have one and I felt artistically it would be the best way for me to do that.
If you could design an awareness raising campaign for one specific issue, which would it be, and what who would you work with in order to achieve it?
I would do more on raising awareness about Sexual Assault. Every 2.5 minutes a woman in the United States is raped and I think its all too easy for society to bury its head in the sand and pretend it doesnt happen. The Women (and men) who are forced to endure such an horrific experience don't have that luxury.
Who better to work on a project as such survivors themselves. Id also work with Women photographers on this campaign perhaps something combining the two.
Can you tell me of any other women on deviantART who you find inspiring?
Plenty of Women! I wish I had time to name them all but here are three that come to mind:
`
bookdiva Bookdiva is one of the most loving and caring people that I know on Deviantart. Shes like a mother figure to so many of us. She always has time and love for everyone and while I cant speak for everyone, I for one know that I'm so greatful for all she does.

kittynn Amanda is not only a mother to absolutely gorgeous children but shes a well liked and respected Photographer here on Deviantart. She represents Strength, creativity and as a fellow woman shes just pretty damn awesome.

kedralynn I love Ambers photography. I know she has a difficult time sometimes with life but her photography is absolutely stunning. Theres strength and beauty there which I think is reflective of how she is personally.
What about outside deviantART, who do you think are good examples of role models for today's young women?
Ah, difficult question this one. Condoleezza Rice and Oprah Winfrey are two prominent Women who come to mind first of all. Both of them have such high roles of power and influence. Both have also overcome adversity to get to where they are today.
Other then that, I think its important to look within your own circle. Find family or friends who inspire you and draw strength and guidance from their experiences not only personally but as part of your own life.
How do you think deviantART has benefited you as an artist?
Deviantart has allowed me to showcase my work, receive feedback and advice on my art. Grow as an artist based on this feedback too.
It has also introduced me to some absolutely incredible people. I love all of my friends here, I really do. Ive had the pleasure of working with fellow artists and it has also exposed me to some amazing art and artists that youre likely to find anywhere.
What advice would you give someone thinking about taking up graphic design?
Go for it! Learn all you can about it. Experiment with different styles. Find tutorials online and teach yourself as much as you can. Once you develop your own style of work, the only limit is your imagination.
Do you have a message that you'd leave for the future generations of women?
Always stay true to yourself. Love completely and unconditionally. Follow your dreams - if you can dream it you can achieve it. Always remember that you are beautiful and strong and never let ANYONE ever tell you otherwise.
Thank you to =mskate for taking the time to participate in International Women's Week on deviantART. You can find other wonderful women who have been interviewed in this series here.
