Photojournalism: An Ethical Approach

`Helewidis:iconHelewidis: reports, January 10
If you click the link (title) you'll be directed to an online edition of a book originally published by Lawrence Erlbaum Associates, Publishers, Hillsdale, New Jersey, 1991: Photojournalism An Ethical Approach by Paul Martin Lester.

I consider it food for thought and reflection about photojournalism and ethics and thus would like to share it with you.

Now follows an excerpt to lure you into reading the full version:

A photojournalist is a mixture of a cool, detached professional and a sensitive, involved citizen. The taking of pictures is much more than F-stops and shutter speeds. The printing of pictures is much more than chemical temperatures and contrast grades. The publishing of pictures is much more than cropping and size decisions. A photojournalist must always be aware that the technical aspects of the photographic process are not the primary concerns.

A mother crying over the death of her daughter is not simply an image to be focused, a print to be made, and a picture to be published. The mother's grief is a lesson in humanity.

If the photojournalist produces a picture without a thought for her tragedy, the lesson is lost. But if the photographer cares for her loss, is made more humane, and causes the readers to share in her grief, photojournalism has reached its highest potential.

Despite its frustrations and low moments, the lesson of humanity is why photojournalism is an extremely rewarding profession. For that reason, photojournalism is worthy of the best thought and actions possible by its participants.

Death of a Dream, Captain America dead.....

`Ghouldaddy:iconGhouldaddy: reports, March 7, 2007
One of the most popular characters in comic history is dead. Hot on the heals of the very successful "Civil War" storyline, Marvel Comics have killed off the iconic hero known as Captain America in his self titled comic "Captain America" #25 released today.

Created in 1941 by writer Joe Simon and legendary artist Jack Kirby , (creator of such hits as the X-Men, the Incredible Hulk and others), Captain America was created to represent the heart of America as it entered World War II. Young Steve Rogers was too frail to enlist in the army but had the heart and dedication that, after taking part in a covert military experiment, would go on to encourage and rally the Allies as the "Sentinel of Liberty", as he fought the Japanese and Nazi's and other threats to America and the Allies.

However, in recent years, "Cap" fell out of touch with the America he so loved which ultimately led to a split in which side of the law certain heroes stood on during the comics event "Civil War". The war pitted friend against friend, husband against wife and was seen as a commentary on the civil liberty vs personal freedom argument in the US since 9/11. It wasn't until Captain America was attacked by the very public he thought he was protecting that he realized just how out of touch he actually was and surrendered the mantle he has carried for over 60's years. This ultimately led to his assassination on the steps of the Superior Court.

Now we all know that in comics no one really stays dead, (unless you're in a Spider-Man comic, then you're screwed) especially when Marvel has announced plans for a Captain America movie in 2009, and that Steve Rogers as Cap still exists in Marvel "Ultimates" line, the move by Marvel to end the life of the one character that stood for "life, Liberty and Justice for All" is a ballsy one in this day and age to say the least. So in memory of Captain America I give you some of the best works on deviantART dedicated to the Star Spangled Avenger:

Even when a hero is no longer wanted, their death will always leave a void in the society they protected.
