About 1000 Words:
Fanart as a whole on dA is often accused of being unoriginal and more popular than it deserves. This feature is intended to combat that opinion by showing the beauty and originality of book/novel fanart, as well as featuring art based on books without large fandoms. Artists have been creating unofficial illustrations throughout history. Painters of the Renaissance brought to life scenes from ancient mythology as written by the classic Roman poets and authors. In the Pre-Raphaelite period, John William Waterhouse painted works based on mythology, Shakespeare, and poetry.
Illustrating a story, whether as a fan or a commissioned professional, can be a wonderful inspiration and opportunity for creativity. An illustrator is the casting director, costume designer, set designer, art director, and location scout for their art. They take 100 of the author's words and add 900 more of their own to make a picture.
The Silmarillion by J.R.R. Tolkien
The Silmarillion is a history of Middle-Earth before the time of The Lord of the Rings. It was published in 1977, five years after the death of J.R.R. Tolkien. It was compiled and edited by his son from the unfinished papers that Tolkien left behind. Included are stories of the origins of Middle-Earth and its peoples, the wars between the elves and the dark lord Morgoth, the downfall of the ancient kingdom of humans, and the origin of the One Ring.

"I wonder what's in a book while it's closed. I know it's full of letters printed on paper, but [..] something must be happening, because as soon as I open it, there's a whole story with people I don't know yet and all kinds of adventures and battles."
