Desktopography 2008 released!

*wirestyle:iconwirestyle: reports, June 6
The desktopography project arrived in 2005 as a place to download nature / topological themed wallpapers with edits from selected designers. Designers spend about 90% of their waking life in front of a computer so the most appealing genre for a wallpaper would be one that has beautiful design mixed with the all important aspect of being outdoors.

My Favourite Wallpaper Vol: 1

$zilla774:iconzilla774: reports, March 20, 2007
We all have our number one favourite dA wallpaper, well, I have about eleventyhundred favourites to be honest and if I had to choose one it would be impossible... anyway, I digress :giggle:

Just because I find it impossible to choose, doesn't mean that others don't! So here are ten of our cuddliest admins giving us their choice for their most loved wallpaper from dA!

-----

$spinegrinder

I think out of all wallpapers I've ever used, I used this the longest time. It manages to look kickass while being very usable due to its neutral color scheme.

¢mindfuckx

I'm a dull chap when it comes to wallpapers. Most of the time my desktop hasn't even got a wallpaper, just a flat mostly dark colour. When I actually decide to use a wallpaper it has to be as minimalistic as possible, otherwise I'll grow tired of it within a few days.. and I don't feel like changing my wallpaper every few days.. when I decide to go with a wallpaper I'll stick with it for months. The wallpaper I'm using now is a great example of what like.. it's dark ( as in not too bright ) it's green.. which is a relaxing colour and most importantly, it's almost empty. Yet the artwork on it is very well crafted, stylish but still subtle. I absolutely love it.

For me, this has always been the epitome of humorous wallpapers. The pure silliness of it all and the attention to detail make it a wallpaper you wouldn't mind gracing your desktop for ages to come. It's subtle enough to not be a distraction but always a clear winner when you're in need of a chuckle. Many grins and snorts of amusement are to be had rotten old Sauron's expense thanks to this fabulous wallpaper.

Most of the time my background wallpaper is something very basic, usually black to save my eyes from killing me at 4am.

But the very moment I read the words favourite wallpaper my thought's immediately went to the classic "Technical Imperfection" by `DivineError I love it! :D

I think I have loved it ever since it was posted to the site and when I started university it was the only wallpaper to grace my machine in the labs.
It's funny though because althought it's a desktop background - that would imply that it's an out of the way background thing. "What're you listening to?" "Oh nothing special, just some background music."

For me this isn't the case with this image at all. When this gets set to as my wallpaper it becomes priority and everything on that desktop goes (not that there was much in the first place but everything goes), I even make the start bar disappear so all there is to look at is this glorious 3D character with needles in his back.

The reasons why this wallpaper is my favourite is because it's wonderfully detailed (check out the wireframe pictures), it's nice to look at overall and he makes me laugh.

I just wish I had a dude like that sat on my desk. :)

I change my wallpapers frequently, but I always come back to this one. The reason? Well, I do love to dance! But beyond that - it has personality, a nice loose feel, and lots of great space in case I need to dump a load of stuff on the desktop. I also use rainlender, and the calendar/to do list fits perfectly on the right-hand side of my screen. It's neither too dark or too bright - which also helps. I have a flatpanel screen and the walls with too much pure white always hurt my eyes. Black is okay, but I prefer a mid-range tone for the prominent empty space color. The only thing that could make this wall better is a higher resolution for those who need it.

^livius

I usually prefer rather stark, minimalist wallpapers, but ^kuschelirmel's The Passage of Time pack enchanted me the moment I saw it. I love all three elements of the pack: the Daliesque floating timepieces, the antique, cracked stone wall with the candles in the window, the raven perched on the door and his gracious escorts.

The window piece is my particular favorite, however, because of the perspective it lends my desktop. It feels almost like my screen itself is a window through which I look across into the haunted manor house next door.

There's an air of mystery about the place. The candles in the window are lit but they cast no light on the interior of the home. The cracks in the wall suggest the old place has been long deserted, or possibly a Miss Havisham-style crazed neglect. And there are the moths, beautifully colored and detailed to both blend into the background and stand out from it, symbols of rebirth and Silence of the Lambs horror, flying away from the light.

It's not just a wallpaper to me; it's a mandala. I could contemplate it for hours, and, in fact, I probably have.

^kuschelirmel

it's cute, it has space for icons and it cheers me up any time I turn on my pc - what else does a good wp need?

-----

@karyaazure

I love this wallpaper. I put it on my work computer which gets very high traffic. I like it because anyone who is able to see my computer screen comments on how awesome or beautiful it is. At which point I say "you haven't seen anything yet!" and usher them into our beautiful community hook, line, and sinker. Not to mention that the deviation itself is breathtaking. I look at it everyday at work as a reminder to fill my life with beautiful and inspiring things.

¢lemontea

This is probably one of the few 1680x1050 wallpapers that isn't blurry, pixelated, or just plain ugly. 2. The colour tone, the style, and the simplistic nature work well as a background -- it's not distracting and it looks cool as well. Plus what guy doesn't like pretty looking females?

-----

@madnessism

"Come Out" by =detail24 is the wallpaper I've been using for the last few months. I'm a big fan of his work, and a friend, so I requested he make the original photo into a wallpaper so I could use it.

Not only does the wallpaper match my dark-themed XP skin perfectly, but every time I view it I feel as if I'm transported to that place. It's somewhere I'd love to be--on some country road far away from the large city I live in, breathing cool air and smelling the rain as storm clouds move in. I can almost hear thunder rumbling in the distance, and it puts me at peace.

I know that's a little deep for a simple wallpaper, but that's exactly why this photo (and all of his landscapes) are far from simple.

All great choices, thanks to everyone!
