Paintings & Airbrushing
Gallery Description: "Digital Art submitted in Paintings & Airbrushing are created via the use of digital tools that mimick those used in traditional ways of painting and airbrushing. With the help of graphical imaging programs, users can achieve similar, if not identical effects found in traditional art. Digital graffiti is also included in this gallery."
As the description says, this section is for creations that attempt to duplicate traditional painting techniques with digital tools. Some of the common software packages used to accomplish this are Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop, Painter, and ArtRage.
The most traditional of all painting techniques is the paintbrush, which can be duplicated easily with the software. As painting techniques have evolved, spray painting also became more available to artists. A common tool for artists to use is the air brush, but spray cans have also been used by creative artists. Because spray cans have been known to be used, all digital graffiti creations were placed in this section due to the basic painting techniques used.
Paintings differ from drawings in the tools used and the techniques that are needed to use these tools. Where drawings are more commonly quick sketches to capture a moment or thought, paintings are typically more time consuming in their approach. Luckily for the digital artist, the mixing of paint to obtain specific colors, and the time required for the paints to dry after applied is eliminated with digital tools. These digital tools do differ from drawings in that overlapping of colors from being sprayed onto the digital canvas can affect the images outcome. With drawings, this doesn't happen as often because drawing tools differ greatly from paint brush tools.
Another point of interest is the ability to use pre-made brushes. Some of the software packages come loaded with shaped brushes and allow the artist to create their own by using templates for the brush pattern. If the image is made with these brushes using point and click techniques to obtain preloaded shapes, the image is more suited for a Miscellaneous gallery instead. The key is whether the artist used brushing techniques, or clicking techniques to create their image as to where it should be submitted.

A sincere artist is not one who makes a faithful attempt to put on to canvas what is in front of him, but one who tries to create something which is, in itself, a living thing.
