Attention Art! - Tasteful Nudity in Black and White
This is a huge collection of carefully selected pictures from the artistic nude galleries - I may stress the word ARTISTIC. All images are black & white shots from a lot of well known artists, as well as from fairly unknowns.
One of the wises saying I have ever heard about photography was, Its easy to take a photograph, but hard to take a good one. I am living proof of this fact, I have taken thousands upon thousands of photographs, with a lot being absolute crap, this is the beauty of digital photography, you can take as many shots as you like and never have to worry until your batteries run out. Anyways here are some beginners tips about taking photographs.
:: Composition ::
When your setting up to take a photo, always look at your 'framing', this is total limit of what you can get in your shot, from top to bottom and side to side. You need to consider how best to fill your frame, there are no set rules on how to do this, so a creative mind will have a field day coming up with different ideas and ways to set up your frame. Its important to consider all of the shot not just the single item your photographing. Some of the best shots I have seen have been really simple, clean, elegant images that portray feeling just as much as the image. This is why I would recommend considering what is in the background of the frame, when people look at the photo they will look at the shot as a whole, they wont just look at the one item you are focused on, they will notice smaller items in the background as well. For this reason I would normally suggest 'bold and simple', this will get your subject across in a clear direct manner. When taking shots do not be afraid to try new camera angles and to change your position, variety is the spice of life, this is why you should always take more photos than you need. Take as many as possible then you can select the best of the bunch for your final image.

:: Lighting ::
The main 2 types of lighting for photographs come under 2 headings, Natural and Artificial. Natural being sunlight or reflected sunlight and Artificial is lamps and more controllable light sources. There are a few things I can suggest about lighting, a lot of my portrait shots are taken in a dark room with a single spot-lamp. This gives u a lot of control over the lighting in your shot, it allows u to light certain areas and leave others in darkness. Lighting is one of those tool I love to play around with, lighting up faces or hiding them is shadow can give some amazing affects. Well worth trying some ideas of your own, again there are no fixed rules saying you need to light a shot a certain way so let yourself go wild with the ideas. One lighting tool you could purchase that might help you is a light reflector, this round sheet of material can be used to reflect either nature or artificial light onto an item or a person, giving your more control. I have used this technique a couple of times, kinda tricky to do if your on your own but easier if you have a friend that can help.

:: Colour vs Black & White ::
First colour related tip I can suggest is never take a photo with your digital camera whilst the camera is set in black and white. Always take the shot in colour and convert it to black and white on your computer later. Its easy to take colour away from a shot but almost impossible to make a black and white shot look like a original coloured photograph. Colour shot always give you more options, using image programmes you could alter the Saturation level or colour toning. That said, I tend to find that Black and White does tend to have an artist edge and often looks better on a final print, But I take every shot in full colour and convert them. Also using image software like Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro, you have the option to alter the brightness and contrast of shots allowing you to give them a little more artistic impact.

:: Subject Matter ::
Themed shots always seem to go down well, but you have to make sure your theme is very clear and understandable. For example some themes I have used in the past are subject such as emotions and feelings, trying to portray a feeling or emotion is tricky but if you can pull it off the shot will be well worth any extra work. If you decide to photograph an item, try to make the shot your own, I mean that in the sense of try and show the viewer what you see, not just what it is. Same with photographing people, but you need to let them shine in your photo. Show the viewer who the person is, not just what they look like.
Examples
These 2 shots are themed shots to show the feeling of being alone.
Not sure if this is any help to anyone, there will be a more in depth advanced look at the technical side of Photography in the next week, so stay tuned.
