:pointr:NaPoWriMo

Another April is upon us and with it brings a deluge of poetry. One a day, it seems, from various writers and writing enthusiasts around deviantART. Why, though, is this happening all of a sudden?

Of course, it's (Inter)national Poetry Writing Month, as our very own ^PoeticWar writes, and that means a poem a day (to keep the author away?) and lots of contests and competitions.

In this issue of the LGU, you'll see just a few of the ongoing contests this month, and of course we'll open with one from the GDs.

In the forums this month you should look out for April Agon threads. These are contest threads with various themes and styles, geared towards both prose writers and poets, that should hopefully challenge or inspire you during this fiery month of fierce writing.

The first contest is Which Line Is It Anyway?. You're given a poem, from which you can pick any line, to be the basis of inspiration or theme for your own work. You can use the line directly, or just as a casual idea.

Good luck, everyone!

:pointr:The Departed

This month isn't all rainbows and sunshine, though. ^adrift, our Prose GD, has been overtaken with life (and we can all understand that) and has decided to step-down from her position. We wish her all the best in the future, and lots of thanks for all the work that she did while on staff.

Go show her some love.

:pointr:Scrollin', scrollin', scrollin'

Maybe you haven't noticed. Maybe you have. The previews have changed, yet again, and it is a very welcome change. Right now, users will not only be able to see the title of their work (something we've been waiting on for quite a while) but you can also hover over the preview and it will scroll through the piece so you can get a better look at it before clicking on.

Big thanks to the deviantART IT group for this help, and more features are in the pipes. We're now waiting on PDF uploads for literature, and we will keep you updated on that as it develops. Thanks a lot to `imperfect who really put the early push on this feature after talking to deviants about improvements for quite a while. Good things are still happening for lit.

:pointr:fotoFRIDAY

One of the biggest on-going literature challenges is the illustrious *fotoFRIDAY. Recently, they just finished a major contest that had some really spectacular results. Something you should definitely look at, just for some quality pieces within our community.

Right now, you can find fotoFRDAY XXVI as the latest of the long-running series. Soon it will surpass the Superbowl!

:pointr:Deviographies

Looking to write, but can't think of anything to write about? Perhaps you've got an environment, a theme, an ending, but no characters. Well, you are in luck now, because we've got quite a few interesting characters to choose from.

Deviographies gives you an opportunity to look into the lives of fellow deviants and create a prose piece based on their biographies. Prizes and fun are to be had, and it would be a good exercise in using characters set-up by other writers in your own style.

Give it a try and thank *intangebility for the opportunity!

:pointr:Terry Pratchet

While some of us may follow our favourite bands around the country, city or world, just holding on to their every word, there are some of us who tend to hold on to much, much more words from their favourite authors. ^adrift has stalked down one Terry Pratchet, well-known author, at a recent convention and posted up a very interesting interview overheard there. Definitely something worth checking out.

:pointr:TELL ME THE TRUTH

*LitFFS and *salshep have something in store for you. They are giving away Ferraris to the first people who post to their news article. ...No, wait...that's a lie.

But that's the point! The literature community has been challenged to fib their way to fabulous prizes with the TELL ME A LIE contest. Prose, poetry, all of it welcome, just makes sure that it's centering around 100% fabrication.

Let the experts judge just how literary your lies are.

Oh, and if you're looking for an introduction, please check out LitFFS - A new way to think. for some background on the newly minted group.

:pointr:Spring Poetry

The haiku. Short, but a good one can take the terse verse to a much deeper level. We all know what it is, but we could all stand to better ourselves in a form that gets a poor image most of the time. =MSJames has decided that this season was the perfect time to do that. The Spring Haiku Contest has just bloomed, and you should definitely take a look at this one. Create something that represents the season as best you can.

I did notice the scrolling feature, and I like it a lot. I've never been a big fan of the text previews, but I must say that this is a huge improvement. Great work!
