When is enough enough... What difference does it make when popular artist vent vent vent and support a site that tolerates deviant behaviour. HA! no wonder its all in a name.
I know some may see this as an issue only for BBW models, but really think about it, how many of you have gotten comments that were not helpful in any way, just hurtful, rude and cruel. I know we can not regulate manners but I think the difference between critiquing someones work and insulting them personally needs to be addressed
You might have heard about Googles new web browser Chrome. But people who really read the EULA found out something rather disturbing: Google gets the rights to everything you create or publish with Chrome. So before we get further info about this, I wouldn't recommend submitting deviations with Chrome.
Quite frankly I'm tired of sitting here and watching the plight of "Anthro". DD's and News features are all fine and dandy, but I feel that real action needs to be taken if "Anthro" is to be taken seriously on dA. It's been nearly nine months since the "Anthro" gallery was created (a move which I still feel was short-sighted and I still disagree with, but that's for another time), and since then there hasn't been any semblance of order, unity, or community.
Part of the reason for that is because "Anthro" cannot be defined. The current criteria for pieces of art in "Anthro" rely mostly on the dictionary definition of "anthropomorphic", and under those conditions I would estimate a good 50% of the non-photography visual art deviations would fall under that category. To me, it appears as if dA wants to separate "furries", and anything that could be confused as a "furry", into its own separate gallery, based solely on appearance and without regard for the intent of the artist.
(I can't define "furry" either, since there doesn't seem to be any set criteria for it. Anthroporphic animals, you say? What about Scooby Doo or Brian from Family Guy? The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles? There seems to be some sort of "invisible line" between "furry" and non-"furry".)
Another contributing factor is the bad rap that "Anthro" gets on the Internet. Nowadays "Anthro" carries connotations of bestiality, along with the stereotype that "Anthro artists" are all perverts and outcasts. That being the case, I can see why many artists are hesitant to upload work to the "Anthro" gallery and want nothing to do with it.
If the expectation is that "Anthro artists" will just suddenly come together and form an "Anthro community" then those people are sadly mistaken. (What exactly is an "Anthro artist" anyway? Am I a "Dwarf artist" because I draw a lot of dwarves?) I already explained the "baggage" that comes with the term "Anthro", not to mention the chan board raids and fursecutioners that something like that would bring. Any sort of "Anthro community" would need meticulous upkeep and moderation, something that would require quite a bit of staff support.
Please try to understand where I'm coming from. Manga/Anime and Cartoons & Comics have received the support and the help that those galleries need ( I use those as examples simply because they were created at the same time Anthro was) while "Anthro" has been in limbo almost since the beginning. I'm just expressing my frustration over the situation.
I hear you, and agree.
My first thoughts over the new 'Anthro' gallery were negative. Infact they still are. It's listed under Subject then Mediums, meanwhile every other category on DA is Medium then Subject. It feels like a lack of artist's equality, just because an artist chooses to draw something that other people don't want to see, or most of the time only see the... well, bad side of Anthropomorphism in art.
I can remember reading people say: 'Thank goodness for that, I'm fed up of looking at anthro.'
Yes, at first I was hesitant to upload to this anthro gallery, when my creations have roots in fantasy. It's up to the artist to define his or her artwork.
I'm this close to digging around and making a article and display of some undeniable great artwork- proper art- from the Anthro gallery.
Thanks for letting me rant. Again...
The reasons that you said about the persecution and jugement without any real form of trial from most is why a lot of folks that draw what most would call anthro would spend more time at another site or completely move out of deviantart.
I completely agree that "Anthro" art gets a bad rap it doesn't wholly deserve. The fact is that sadly people will create obscene content in any genre. It may be less noticeable in some, but it does exist.
Anime still carries a stigma of excessive fanservice and over-the-top violence to many people in the US, but the fact is those are some shows, not all of them. For example, a "Dragonball Z" movie and "My Neighboor Totoro" are both anime, but entirely different. People tend to generalize things far too much.

I imagine that one of the big problems has been the lack of an official Gallery Director until ^y2jenn took up the post recently. Hopefully it will get some cleaning up and reorganizing like the Manga and Comics galleries have been getting.
Of course, I never agreed with the creation of the Anthro gallery in the first place, and I still don't (although it makes it much easier to browse), but as long as it exists it deserves some attention.
The problems you listed are very valid and I can see them as being a big obstacle in making any sort of organized and well-kept community here.

Now it's time for August 2008 Visual Art Features, many new art to discover!
Don't forget that many artists need to be viewed, they deserve it! Fave Fave Fave! My main purpose in doing a monthly feature about (to my point of view) 'the best visual art' is to put in the same level as well wellknown artists and popular creations as unknown artists and under-exposed creations. Artists need to be supported. So don't be shy!
Here's the Menu per Category :
Digital Paintings & Drawings | Mixed Media | PhotoManipulations | 3-Dimensional | Vector & Vexels | Photography | Traditional Paintings & Drawings | Artisan Crafts
With a gallery that takes you on a journey into another world, `spyroteknik has firmly secured a place as one of the top artists within our community. Always willing to participate in events as well as providing critique and guidance to members in such a humble yet inspiring manner is a quality which deserves recognition. So it's with great pleasure that we award this month's Deviousness to Martin Bland. Read More

And you summed it up perfectly.

Anthro does get a bad rap, but there are some truly talented anthro artists on here.
