What ever happened to all those people who would flock to your prints account and purchase tons of stuff because they liked your art? What happened to all those constructive comments we used to give, where we'd actually help the artist, rather than just tell them their piece is "1337"? What happened to the good morals of commenting before you favourite?
The good news is the deviantART community still has these ethics infused in our members somewhere. The challenge now is to bring them back.
Bring back the ART to deviantART.
We (~kle0012 and ~kittysyellowjacket) created with this purpose in mind. We miss the good old days of dA, and with your help, and community support, we want to bring back the reason deviantART was created. ART!
Help us bring back the ART to DeviantART today! Details on how to join this movement are available at our journal.
Nice idea, but I find it funny when you talk about the "good old days". Especially because you are both members since '06. I think the good old days would refer to a year 2004, before the main site growth started in 2005. Good luck with the club.
Since I joined in 2005 I've noticed a drastic decline in constructive commenting. I attribute it to sites like MySpace being on the upswing.
Anyway, I think its more about a certain state of mind than when you joined. ~kle0012 is simply overflowing in the community spirit department. His heart is in the right place
I am sure he is, and I agree that the reason for the lack of overall quality in some aspects of the site is due to MySpace and its members having dA as their secondary site. I see that every day, and would really love to help dA to be as good as it can be. It is the best global community in the world, and we can make it even better.
And about the Constructive Criticism. I agree that it helps the artists get even better, but I think that not everyone is qualified enough to write them. As I'm am just a casual photographer, I can not use my experience to write a constructive critique to someone with more experience than me. I can't find a way to help someone who is better than me. All I can do is give the artist as much support as I possibly can.
I don't think constructive critique necessarily has to include suggestions for improvement to be useful to the artist. Even someone more skilled than you can benefit from comments about how a particular piece makes you feel. If I can't offer any suggestions for improvement on a piece, I can still offer comments about how a piece makes me feel or my interpretation of what the piece is trying to say. I always appreciate hearing how my work affects people, even if they don't have any actual help to offer. I can then compare their feelings to what my intentions were in creating the work, and determine if my execution is effective or not.
Its all about helping people to grow within a community. Even those of us low on the food chain can contribute something
For example, if I made a painting intended to convey happiness, I'd want to know if I succeeded. If people only faved it but never commented, how would I know that it didn't convey sadness to them? Without comments, there's no way to tell if you're getting the reaction you want to achieve with your work.

I agree, who's to say somebodies not just favouriting your work because they can? I know a lot of people who would do it just to get somebody to look at their page.
Comments add the personal touch, they let you know exactly how somebody feels about a piece, even if it's just one word. That's something a favourite will never be able to do.
