`GeneratingHype on letters, editing and GDship

^lovetodeviate:iconlovetodeviate: reports, August 30
An interview with ex-GD, writer, editor, fascinating person: `GeneratingHype. Here are some tidbits from the interview (which I recommend reading in full):

"Letters presuppose a sort of authenticity, and I truly believe that a story—no matter the form—needs to be authentic and believable.

"Sometimes I wish I had stories such as "I wrote my first published poem at three and a half!" or "I started writing stories at two!", but writing never came easy for me and is still not very easy for me.

The Use of Adverbs in Fiction Writing

=DarcKnyt:iconDarcKnyt: reports, August 29
Adverbs are the endangered species of the adult fiction world. They're frowned on like putting a Baby Ruth bar in a punch bowl at a wedding reception -- not a good idea. They're also indicative of weak writing ... but why? This article covers why adverbs are evil and what you can do to avoid using them.

Children's story writing contest

~futilitarian:iconfutilitarian: reports, April 14, 2007
...that is, a contest for people who write children's stories, not a contest for children who write stories for people. To clarify.

The Works bookshops (UK) are running a competition in association with Walker Books and in support of Book Aid International to offer all you budding authors the opportunity to see your own storybook being sold exclusively at The Works.

5000 copies of the winning story will be printed at Midpoint Press in the Midlands and distributed throughout the UK and sold for charity.

The only rules are that the story must be aimed at 2-7 year old children, be no more than 250 words and the author must be 18 or over!

It does not state anywhere on the site that UK entries only are accepted, but this contest may be of limited appeal to those outside the UK. There is no financial reward but if you'd like the chance to see your writing in print it may be worth a go.

Closing date for entries: 01/06/07
