Earth King Kuei, the fifty second ruler of the Earth Kingdom Capital of Ba Sing Se and indeed that of the Earth Kingdom itself. The Earth King as he is more commonly known because of his royal status, is a kind and understanding, if not a little bit naive man in his still early years, around his late twenties or early thirties. In the show, he is at first seen to be a strict man, though this is understandably mistaken, as Aang and company enter his palace by effectively invading by air, laying waste to his palace guards, and then knocking down his big fancy door.

The Earth King however took on a softer side when his chief minister, Long Feng, accidentally mentioned that Aang was the avatar when ordering his Dai Li agents to throw them out of the Capital. From then he is skeptical at first of the Avatar and friends, but is later seen to be very kind and understanding towards those around him, if not childish in some aspects, as with his pet bear, Bosco, whom he has had since taking the throne.

In the show, his past is shtrouded in mystery, as it is never mentioned, however it is known that Earth King Kuei took the throne at the age of 4 when his father, the fifty first ruler of Ba Sing Se died. At the time apparently, Long Feng was able to take much of the formal powers of the Earth King while he was at a young age.
According to himself, he has never left the palace, and that no Earth King has ever set foot outside of the wall, thus he never knew of the war with the Fire Nation. It is likely, evident by this fact, that his father and perhaps even several generations of Earth Kings never knew about the war.

As the Earth King, he oversees the most numerous, and most elite soldiers in the Earth Kingdom, commanded by his most loyal generals, the Council of Five who include two known Generals, Sung and How. The Council of Five make all military decisions on the Kings behalf with his consent.
The Earth King also apparently has some form of holding over the Dai Li, as when Long Feng is exposed for hiding the truth from the Earth King, they arrest Feng almost instantly, though it is evident that his hold over them is almost next to nothing, and that the Dai Li acted out so as not to rouse trouble for themselves as well.

Earth king Kuei himself is extremely attached to his pet bear Bosco, as seen many times during his appearances. He is almost never seen without him, and even when they are apart, the King is always trying to get back to him. When the coup d'etat led by Azula leads to the Earth Kings imprisonment, he immediatly seeks out Bosco when he escapes with Toph and Sokka.
He even has a great faith in his animal companion, stating that he has brilliant animal instincts that can sense any kind of trouble.
The King also throws a party for his bear, as seen in the episode "The City of Walls and Secrets", where the King made a cameo appearance.

The Kings attire is notably different than anyone elses. He wears pale green formal robes under a brighter green short cape, pinned at the neck with a collar and a dark green trim. His hands have a pair of somewhat ornate gauntlets that extend half way up his forearm. He wears a thick looking belt and a long bead necklace that flows halfway down his chest. On his face he has a pair of small glasses. Apart from a Ba Sing Se student who the Avatar and co. questioned about the war, the Earth King is the only one seen with glasses. He also wears a crown, that along with his bekt has the Earth Kingdom symbol emblazoned on its centre.
The Earth Kings clothing are similar, and likely modeled from the Chinese Qing dynasty, as one or two emperors of the time wore clothing that matches the Earth Kings.


The Earth King is a brilliant character in the show, and the show is worth watching
