Artisans and Functional Art - June 2009

^Kitten-of-Woe:iconKitten-of-Woe: reports, July 8
This is the fifth in this series that features art by members of the Artisan Crafts gallery that I feature daily in one of my journal modules. I add one each day and each is featured for 24-48 hours and then all are featured at the beginning of the next month as a group. These artisan works are found through my casual browsing and they could be very recently uploaded or they could be older works. They could have been made by very well-known artisans, by someone still unknown, or by someone very new to dA. They are random finds, so one gallery might be represented more than another and one artist might get featured more than once in the same month. My picks are totally random finds and that which struck me as something wonderful... I hope you think so, too, and that you enjoy this new series!

Plushology vol. 4, the dolls house

`kittyvane:iconkittyvane: reports, May 2, 2007
The word "doll" comes from the Greek work, "eidolon", meaning idol. "Rag doll" refers generically to dolls made of any fabric while "cloth doll" refers to a subset of rag dolls made of linen or cotton, but these terms vary some what and a cloth doll can be made from other materials besides linen or cotton and still be called such.
Defining what an art doll is is a bit more complicated. Since dolls are usually seen as simple play things, it can be difficult to think of them as being something completely different. As with any other form of art, what definses a doll as art is just as hard to pin down beyond the fact that they are meant to evoke emotions and to provoke reactions. An art doll, like any other piece of art, is always in some way singular or unique and it has a meaning, a soul.

This selection of rag/cloth dolls is just a handful of all the wonderful dolls that can be found in the Plushie gallery here on DA.

If you come across a plushie you'd like to see featured in the next installment of Plushology or if you are/know of a plushie artist in need of some attention, let me know!

You're very welcome. :)
Your Ziggy doll is wonderful, I really like all the details (the tiny nipples!*) you've put into it and how it really does look like Ziggy.

* Did you know that the french word for doll, "poupée", most likely comes from the latin word "puppa" (or "pupa") meaning nipple or breast.
`kittyvane:iconkittyvane: May 2, 2007, 1:07:26 PM
You're very welcome. :)

I'd have liked to link to the tutorial you made of the felt indie girl as well, but for the life of me I couldn't come up with a logical way to add it in.
If I ever do a feature of plushie tutorials (which I should really), I'll be sure to add it there.
`kittyvane:iconkittyvane: May 2, 2007, 1:10:22 PM
No, it's you lot that's cool! :D

I  Hiasl

P.S: Can't wait to see more pictures of Ana Ernst, she's super cute. I actually almost featured her, but since Hiasl has stolen my heart with his buck teeth, he got the feature instead. :giggle:
