Is deviantART a drug?

`Solitude12:iconSolitude12: reports, May 12, 2007
I've been on deviantART for over one year now. Not much, I know, but already I feel as if deviantART is my home. This is how many deviants feel. deviantART is a place in which we can share thoughts and have fun! We can talk about anything, and post art. We can be a community together, right?

But as you think about it, deviantART is just a drug. No, not a drug that you would smoke, or something. But a drug which has us addicted. Us deviants, we are addicted to deviantART. When we come home, we think of deviantART! We speak of deviantART to our friends, and we are online for hours. Some of us aren't fully into deviantART, and find it boring. Sooner or later those will leave at one point, and find deviantART uninteresting. Until the time comes in which, something happens.

deviantART gives you a week trial of a subscription. Or, maybe somebody gives you a subscription. deviantART makes money, we find deviantART interesting, and continue to use it! All those non-subscribers are annoyed, and they want a sub, especially after the trial. They start joining contests and such, or pay with their own money to get a subscription. Sure, a great moment. But does this subscription gets us to fall into the path of addiction. Are we addicted to deviantART?

The answer is for most of us, yes. I even know I'm addicted, and I'm sure most of you can tell that you are too, addicted. Some don't believe it, but most of us can tell that online communities are like real life communities. Soon we grow to become attached. At some points it gets dramatic. Those who love us don't know what to do. They see us glued to the computers, trying to help us. But we convince them it's okay.

I am not here to tell you to stop using deviantART, or to stop using the internet. It's a way of life, just like how TV started, how cell phones started, and now the internet. It's a modern tool in which we now need to live, and can't live without. All I want is that you all realize that deviantART isn't your home. You barely know anybody, and in 20 years, none of us would be here, not even the staff of deviantART. Just understand, that if you feel like you are attached, or just realized this, please take a break. One week, two weeks. Maybe a whole month. You will feel amazing and you will no longer feel that need to go online.

Thank you, and I hope you all have a wonderful journey, without anything pulling you down.

I think you give people too little credit and subs, a little too much of the same. Also, in 20 years none of us are going to be in the same place we are now anyway.

I agree with you there, anytime I'm near a computer the first thing I do is logon to DA [other than turning the computer on of course ;)] :D But that's purely because I'm a slacker and cant be bothered to get on with my actual work... :paranoid:

I think its mostly "addictive" because of the people here - Those who take part in the community, use the forums and chats on a regular basis are more likely to develop friendships with other people which will keep them coming back. Those who're only really in it for themselves wont develop these types of friendships and lose out on something great, thus finding themselves disinterested and buggering off
