Changes to the Submission Menu Design

$Moonbeam13:iconMoonbeam13: reports, May 28, 2007
The next time you attempt to submit a deviation to your gallery you will find that things look quite a bit different. Over the last few weeks we all here at deviantART have taken a long hard look at the submission process and how our deviants made use of the system.

After a lot of thought, redesign, and feedback from our core group of beta testers we are proud to present a new submission system format to all of you.

The first thing which we should try to make clear is that the changes which you see in the submission process are only changes to the submission process- the overall gallery structure has not changed and remains exactly as you remember it and you don’t need to worry about your old deviations being moved or edited..

The changes to the submission process are a direct result of us taking a good hard look at the old submission process and finding a few inconveniences. Anyone who has been here a while and used the submission process fairly regularly would have noticed that the old system essentially presented you with the unvarnished gallery structure and this required you to be fairly familiar with what the categories represented and how they were structured in order to find the most appropriate place for your deviation. This old system required people to actually take some time to learn it and because it followed the gallery structure exactly your first and second selections severely limited the options which were presented to you later which in turn could result in newer deviants misplacing a lot of their work accidentally and many interesting categories going unnoticed because of the particular submission pathway it was placed upon.

What we have attempted to do is to rethink the submission system not only to make it more instantly intuitive and easy to navigate but also to place related items which were separated on different "pathways” together logically and we have also attempted to expand the number of options offered to you as you work your way through the submission process. In addition to the changes to the old submission process we have also included a special Submit here button on each Browse page so that you can submit straight into whatever gallery you may be viewing without having to visit the actual submission page.

While working your way through this new process you’ll see certain categories or galleries offered in more than one place, a good example is that Cartoons, Comics & Manga is not only offered as a first choice but is also offered as a third choice under Drawings & Illustration, and you’ll find it under Mixed Media and Paintings & Airbrushing as well. All of these options will route your submission to the same Cartoons & Comics gallery. There are similar cases of numerous choices leading to the same gallery sprinkled throughout the submission process for the maximum in convenience.

The new process also represents a shift in making it easier to find the proper gallery for your art; no longer do you need to worry right off the bat whether your drawing is Digital Art, Traditional Art, or Anime or a Design or a Comic. Now you can just choose that you are submitting a Drawing and the following choices will help guide your work to the proper gallery in what we believe to be a simple, logical and easy to learn fashion.

In the long run we hope that this new system helps to cut down on misplacements; no more tattoo designs mixed into the gallery reserved for tattoo photographs for example; in the old system these categories could never be viewed side-by-side while submitting which is something which we have fixed. We hope that other groupings and expanded options have a similar effect on the other galleries as well.

Rearrangement for the sake of making a process easier has got to be a good thing.

after taking a hard look at the new page, it definitely does look a hell of a lot easier to understand. having this news article explain it really put things into perspective for me. at first when $lolly announced this in his journal, i thought it was sort of ridiculous. now, i see it as a way more positive turn for the site. way to go!
:icongodofodd:
I think these changes are certainly for the better.

Go back to the old way... ;_; I've already made my complaints when the betas were testing it... @_@ Please go back...or at least let us have a choice with this way or the old way. Its so very confusing...it takes longer to actually get to the category you want to submit something and the wording is confusing. It took me a LONG while to figure out the whole "drawing and illustration" crud. And it doesn't help that "painting and airbrushing" is a completely new category... >.< The same with mixed media and with the anime/manga. Why isn't that split into two parts like the others? And why does it have to have a completely separate category? Why don't you just put it under "drawing and illustration"? The same with the "painting and airbrushing".
Also, why have "contests and projects" separate from "deviantART related"? The contests and projects are related to dA. What qualifies as "other art"?
And why is there a no category spot? Isn't the whole point of this to put something into a category? And where are the scraps?
I usually, well, I almost never complain about dA 'cause you guys really do do a great job, but this...most of it just seems really stretched out *shakes head*
