Bill Sullivan's NYC Subway Turnstile Pictures

^l8:iconl8: reports, 1d 7h ago
Bill Sullivan developed a situation so that various subjects could be defined by the constraints of exactly the same mechanical apparatus. The scenario consisted of someone passing through a subway turnstile. At the moment that the subjects passed through the turnstile, unknown to them, he took their picture stationed at a distance of eleven feet. Bill stood there turning pages of a magazine observing subjects out of the corner of my eye, waiting for only the moment when they pushed the turnstile bar to release the shutter.

His images are fascinating and are inspiring. They encourage us to try something different and when we do it shows what can be achieved.

Better Digital Photography Magazine-Free online

^kkart:iconkkart: reports, 17h 16m ago
From the Publishers of "What Digital Camera" and "Amateur Photographer", IPC Media today has announced a new online photography magazine, "Better Digital Photography" that people can read free and fully online, it is also interactive with embedding video tutorials from the magazine and mouse-over tips. Aimed at the entry and intermediate level photographer, it is heavily devoted to equipment and technique-focused photography content.

From the IPC Media website:

Publishing director Alex Robb says: “This is an exciting and innovative new venture for the photo portfolio. The editorial team have worked incredibly hard to create bespoke content, including technique videos and other interactive content. I am delighted that we have secured distribution to around two million photographers to ensure that as many people as possible benefit from the excellent tips and advice. Better Digital Photography is a further indication of how IPC continues to innovate in this competitive sector.”

Editor Mat Gallagher adds: “We wanted to create a product that helps the reader expand their knowledge, while being easy to use. It is thanks to the talents of art editor Steve Crabb that we have managed to produce such a visually stimulating and accessible magazine that surpasses anything else in the market place.”

My thoughts, this is downright awesome and VERY well done, it is like looking at an actual magazine, but the fact that it has videos embedded within for tips, tutorials, and techniques, make this even better! You can also subscribe for free, via email for upcoming issues, make personal notes within the magazine, and download a copy to your hard drive. GO GET IT!

An interview with bendisChild, photographer

~Moniquette:iconMoniquette: reports, May 30, 2007
*bendisChild

Name: Mihai Radi
Age: 25
Residence: Bucharest, Romania
Current profession: Quality assurance tester
Ever been in an art show/exhibition? yes, group exhibitions in Bucharest
Ever been published before? no, or nothing that I'm aware of.
How do you feel about this interview? makes me smile...
Gear: Canon 350D, 18-55mm lens and tripod
Things that you’d never want to photograph: I don’t know, the only image I refused to take so far was when a friend wanted a last memory with my passed away father
Things that you’d like to photograph someday: my wife and child

The lights, the shadows

Quote: “if you're looking for photography, look somewhere else. I’m just lettin’ my fears out in jpeg format”.

***“Bendis is very dear to me”, you once said. What makes you a bendisChild?

It was supposed to be “the child of Bendis" but... (:
Why this nick? Because after my mother passed away, for many reasons I associated her with Bendis; and "child" because that's what I am, a 25 year old man who thinks his mother is the moon and his father is the sun above... and enjoyin' sanity, thank you.

But who is Bendis?

She's a part of the Dacian world, the Mother goddess. Dacians were the people who lived in the lands where I was born and I'm sure they still do, they never left, never died. No need to trust me, it's enough to see some eyes from the villages in Hunedoara.
The Moon from above, the mists of the forests, the visions that come at night, an innocent smile...I see her in all those things. They called her the mother of the forests and charms, the White lady, I don’t care much for those names coming from people who don’t feel it. I just know how it feels inside in the nights when I walk in the shadows...a rope that connects two worlds, that she sure is.
The important thing is You are free to believe in anything you want. I believe in what I feel.

*** How old were you when you began taking an interest in photography, and who supported you? ~Diangos

About one year and a half ago my father purchased my first compact camera.
~ghilimei who among other good things made this deviantART account and posted my first pictures,my friends Cristina who always encouraged me to shoot more and Uzu who always spoke his mind freely and helped me see things I didn’t see before.

***What makes your photography more bendisChild-like?

I'm not sure of my path yet also I'm not sure that what I do is photography...
I didn't notice recurrent subjects, colors, techniques; probably my friends can answer this question better; although I can say I like "silhouettes" a lot and simple subjects and yeah: green is my color.

***Which is your favorite image of your own work, and why do you prefer that specific one? ~blazeer

Hard to decide...from what I uploaded on deviantART, today I like the most [link] because I cried when I did it and later on but again, hard to decide.

***Do you plan your photography or does the inspiration come all of a sudden when you’re holding the camera?~LarmeEterne
and…
Do you prefer the photographic outcome of spontaneity or planned ahead projects?*vladxc

Sometimes I have the idea about what I’m going to do, reach the spot and then set the minor details.
Sometimes I just see the scene with the eyes, take the camera and get it
I prefer any, as long as the result is good (: and I think everyone else does the same.

***How much time do you spend to create a certain photo? Is that only that fleeting moment when you push the button or do you feel the time span is different?~dacul

1/4000 - 30/1 seconds and some clicks.
It's more than time that I spend for every shot I have in the gallery, it really is. In each of them, there's a part of me, silly as it sounds this time I'm serious. Don’t worry, I won’t upload nudes anytime soon :P
But we don’t have the time to search the meanings nowadays. I don’t judge anybody since I do it too sometimes.
The most important thing I do through my images...yell out my feelings; fears or pleasures, just yell out.
Why? (: this I cannot tell you, you have to feel it yourself.

***How much of the “real you” can the viewers identify in your photos, if they pay really close attention?

I wish I knew how much. Anyway, they'll see parts that won’t manifest in other ways but through my images.

***How much are you influenced by current “trends” in photography or your appearance? What about the influences of your “idols”, if you have any?~HoldYourColor

Around 0 % and yeah, I'm that boy who likes wearing rags and feels good too :boogie:. I don't have idols, I respect any man who does a good job, friend or foe.
Influences...I learn and use anything that feels right, coming from friends or others.

***Have you ever been involved in commercial shoots or only personal projects?~PetiteLutin

Yes, I was paid for images a couple of times. It was fun

***What must a photographer do to get more recognition ? ~Black-Butt3rfly

Shoot the pope and yell out loud :P

***Did deviantART contribute to your getting more acknowledged? What about friends and photo subjects?

Yes and that's a bold yes with an exclamation mark after it
I don’t have accounts on other sites, I like it here even if there are bad parts, deviantART is a good thing.
Friends helped a lot, "enemies" even more ;)

***Have you ever felt like giving up photography entirely? ~bristena

Why give up a good thing?
That would be a NO (:

Moods& moments

***What’s that one special thing that makes you feel complete?~cosmina0927

She is, though I haven’t met her yet.

*** What are you? where are you going, why are you hiding? what are people to you?*drefeyja

I'm a child, going to die someday (:
I'm not hiding; it's just that you're looking with the left eye.
I am human too, how does a boy call his brothers and sisters?

***Do you consider yourself to be a pessimist or an optimist?

I don’t think pessimists exist, they all committed suicide: P

***Is a dream worth living to its end? =Alexandru1988

Yes, and dreaming your life till the end is worth trying too (:

***What do you choose : what is, was or will be ? *MadelaineDark

I like to think that the future will be better than the past or the present.
