My mother, both of my Grandmothers, are artists.... One grandmother has Master's Degree for art! My uncle and aunt were Architects... So over the years they have trained me to use the best quality art supplies that I can!
Coming highly recommended by at least three generations of artists these art supplies rock my creative mind!
KOH-I-NOOR RAPIDOGRAPH PENS
KOH-I-NOOR RAPIDOGRAPH 7 PEN SLIM SET is what I use...
The best refillable pens that I have ever used!!!! uses waterproof ink, excellent flow..... the downfall is the pens can leak.... do not shake them at all! there is a pen starter that sucks the end of the pen to start the ink.....
Letraset PANTONE TRIA MARKER
I own the ASSORTED 72 SET
Great Refillable markers with three nib sizes, colors match Pantone's color matching system and Photoshop has swatch sets to match the colors.... as one of the presets! The ink doesn't leave the muddy overlapped look that most markers gives you when coloring... Alcohol based so you can achieve a great affects with some 99% Rubbing Alcohol and a paintbrush!
Prismacolor Colored Pencils
I own the 120 box set
Good Smooth quality pencils that have a great array of color...
Buy a couple of colorless blender pencils to go with the set, I use them to get the smooth affect between color!
Prismacolor Watercolor Pencil
I own the Set of 36
Great watercolor pencils, the colors match other Prismacolor sets....
Unison Soft Pastels
Hand rolled pastels.....um...... a little expensive but somehow I got a set for really cheap! usually the pastel is the size of a normal thumb (about $8 a piece normally) but I bought my set of 36 from a yard sale...... great find too.... they were never used...
Chalk Pigment blocks
I have a large set of pigment blocks that I powder and mix with water. I use them like paint sometimes..... Hard to find the type I use since they were my grandmother's and probably have some type of heavy metal in them. You can find newer pigments somewhere if you like the idea! usually used to make your own chalks!
Bager model 150 Airbrush
WONDERFUL AIRBRUSH!!!!! a must have indeed!!!! I use a small 200psi Coleman shop compressor to run it.... I make teeshirts with it sometimes......
Sets of Misc Circles and Oval Templates/Stencils
Buy the ones made for drafting that allows for the pencil.
Orange Drafting Triangles
a must have for simple angles and straight lines.
Staedtler Alvin "Maverick" Drafting Compass box Set
my aunt gave me the set.....I was telling her how tired I was using school compasses to make circles. These have removable sharp points for the center... and it takes large lead not pencils....
to sharpen lead I use a mechanical pencil sharpener,
Prismacolor Turquoise Graphite Pencil sets
HB, 2B, 2H, is basically all you need.... but I would buy the whole set of hard and soft.....
Mechanical Pencil
my particular favorite is a Clickster size 0.07 size lead....
I also have a Staedtler Mars.780 that takes full sized lead like you would find in a normal pencil..... Takes a strange pencil sharpener through.
Sandpaper Block
For sharpening and shaping pencils, chalk and some pastels, a must have....
Latex Dry cleaning Pad....
Used with ink, to dry the blots and prevent smudges
(beware if you have allergies to latex)
Reeves Oil Set
I use the set of 24 tubes of oil paint in a wooden case... good for beginners!
Brushes
For almost any media I prefer a good real hair paint brush.
I don't really care for synthetics, just a personal preference.
These are the brushes that I use.....
Gold-N-Flo Golden Taklon Brushes &
Loew Cornell - La Corneille Golden Taklon Brushes...
Roma Plastilina Clay Blocks
Sculptors use this oil based clay to make the originals for casting.
Good clay that is not really that soft; but is pliable. Usually used to make busts and small sculptures... Used by Professionals all over the world....One of the worlds finest modeling materials!
Paper
I am Particular for Bristol Board since most of my work currently is markers.... Hot press 100lbs... 14in x 17in is the basic size I use.... I also recommend Rice paper, Vellum, standard
~Info on paper~
Hot press creates smooth shiny paper..
Cold Press makes rough textured paper....
(The more LBS means thinner paper, while less is thicker...)
Most watercolor paper is cold pressed and made with less pressure when being pressed... I like cold pressed myself for the texture.... Rag watercolor paper I believe is the best!
Good Supply Company
[link] Jerry's Artarama has great discount prices on supplies.... about half price of DickBlick!
[link] DickBlick carries more of some supplies than Jerry's but the prices are basic!
Well I hope this helps someone decide when they face the daunting task of choosing what they should buy and where they can find good prices.
I hope fellow Deviants will also add what supplies made them happy with their work below in comments; to assist the furthering of other's creative minds when faced with WHAT TO BUY!!!!!.
