The third version of
Safari, Apple's Web browser that was available only on Mac OS X, is now
available for download (in beta) for Microsoft Windows XP and Vista, as well (the installer refused to work on any version less than Windows 2000.) Advertised as a fast, elegant and standard-compliant, Apple's Web browser has now joined iTunes as official ambassadors for Apple's OS X on Windows. This is especially great news for Web developers and designers, as well, wishing to test their work on Safari without direct or remote access to a Mac.
Safari is based on free/open
Webkit rendering engine which in turn is based on
KDE's
KHTML rendering engine but with (now relatively) a lot of changes. The developers of next version of KDE -- KDE 4 -- are now
researching the feasibility of merging the two projects, thus unifying the rendering engines in Safari and
Konqueror.
I couldn't (so far) get the Windows version of Safari on GNU/Linux using
Wine because of some DLL errors. Still too early to tell if there are going to be any possible workarounds.
