I Don't Care About Your New Portfolios

=Commander-Luminaire:iconCommander-Luminaire: reports, July 1
So today I've been getting fullscreen advertisements for the new portfolio feature. I'm aware of it, thank you, and I don't care. Why does deviantART feel the need to advertise it like this to subscribers? I pay to not have any form of advertisement, including ones from deviantART. I know there is a feature that notifies everyone of new features in their message centre, so why is it that you guys feel that fullpage advertisements are the best way to let us know? That's just more irritating than anything :|

An Open Letter to Muslims and Concerned Deviants

`dancewiththesky:icondancewiththesky: reports, June 12, 2007

(Please read carefully before responding and please don't specifically target any deviant with harassment in your response, if any. Thanks!)

This letter is about the continuing (re-)opening of anti-Islam accounts on deviantART and the associated response from Muslims or otherwise concerned deviants on deviantART. It suggests how to respond to (or, when necessary, ignore) them. Although the letter's focus is anti-Islam accounts, the same could be applied in other similar cases as well. No names mentioned. No thumbs displayed.

On deviantART and elsewhere on the internet, individuals and organizations seek to promote their ideologies through writing or any other form of expression made available by the Internet as a rich medium. Although there are those who are interested in constructive, unbiased and open-minded discussions, there are some others who are solely seeking to offend and insult whoever embraces a certain ideology. Their existence is possible and is (dare I say) natural in an environment that encourages ideological and creative freedom where they exploit them for their pathetic attention-seeking activities.

On deviantART, there have been individuals and/or groups serving as hubs to launch "offense campaigns" against Islam and Muslim deviants. They exhibit one of more of the following:

- Most of them are smoke screen (fake) accounts. They don't use their original accounts for fear of being banned after being reported for harassment.

- Most of them use prophet Muhammad(pbuh)-mocking cartoons resembling (and sometimes far more offensive and ignorant than) the infamous twelve cartoons published by the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten.

- They watch as much Muslims and Muslim groups (and generally as much deviants) as they can, in very short periods to grab their attention. Sometimes they leave ohmygodimmawatchya comments for added sarcasm. To add more confusion, they sometimes state they are Muslims or leave "friendly" comments on Muslim deviant profiles for some more added sarcasm.

- They start personal attacks to drag deviants to insult them so that they can report the said deviants to the help desk where they could be suspended or banned for violating deviantART Etiquette policy.

If you ever come across any such accounts or deviations, I strongly suggest that you consider the following before you respond to them:

- DON'T INSULT THEM! I can't stress enough on that you should NOT insult any of these individuals or groups. Stay away from expletives and personal attacks because: a) they do not contribute in any positive way to the situation, b) they can (and will) get you banned for violating deviantART policies, and c) they -- the insults -- ultimately serve those individuals' purposes. Don't let them drag you to insult them so that they can report you for banning or suspending your account. Don't fall for this dirty trick!

- Don't organize a ticket-sending campaign at deviantART help desk! Don't make journal entries calling all deviants you know to send tickets to the help desk calling for suspending or banning the offending account. Why shouldn't you do this? a) Those individuals are are looking for attention and publicity, as laid out before. Don't give them what they want and b) the green frogs at the help desk will get flooded by all the tickets on the very same issue (which is an awful waste of time) and will eventually ban or suspend your account for organizing a campaign to "spam" the help desk. Does this mean you can't report them yourself? In extreme cases, yes you can but attach to this all arguments about what constitutes creative freedom (and adversely what's hate art) and what's not. But there's, I think, a surely better course of action explained in the next point.

- Exercise your free speech and creative freedom rights to explain your true beliefs and expose their lies. In a polite and calm manner, explain what's wrong about these deviations or journals. The best way, I think, to do this is by making art (smile, you're on deviantART!) in your own account conveying your point of view and explaining your arguments. Should you talk to them at their accounts? As laid before, these individuals are not seeking constructive discussions but solely trying to feel "power" delusions of being able to insult or otherwise offend people who embrace a certain religion or ideology. One might argue that proper explanations should be added as comments to their deviations for "passer-bys" who could stumble upon their art. That's a good point but you should consider all the points made above. If you find yourself being dragged to personal attacks, terminate the conversation.

- If you want, you can make them remove you of their devWatch list and block their comments from your account by following the instructions at

FAQ #96: Can I block people from my user page?

We probably wont ever understand that people are all the same and that we shouldn't get judged because of our religion, but because of what we do as an individual.

Well said. Fortunately, I haven't seen any such accounts or experienced flaming like this (I'm Jewish, but I'm sure there's anti-Jew stuff on here as well) but I can imagine how awful it would be. On a site dedicated to art, no less!
