Artist Relations

Artist Relations Newsletter: June 16, 2007

$Moonbeam13:iconMoonbeam13: reports, June 16, 2007

:pointr: Director of Artist Relations
:iconmoonbeam13:

Hello!

The purpose of Artist Relations is to strengthen the community spirit as well as network with fellow artists so that we may bring outside opportunities to you, and help you to hone your skills. The Gallery Directors are the first people you should go to regarding your galleries. They are the people you need to make gallery suggestions to, and ask questions about your specific genre, or seek knowledge from. They also act as your lifeline to the administration. They are here to support and listen, and I can tell you we've got incredibly talented, devoted and passionate people on this team, so get to know them!

:bulletgreen: We wish $y2jenn all the luck in the world in her new position on HD and CEA but we'll miss her greatly!

:bulletgreen: New gallery directors will be added shortly ( a lot of them) so be patient.

:bulletgreen: Thank you to everyone that responded to my journal expressing your wants from Artist Relations. I will be addressing all of your concerns and suggestions in the coming week.

:bulletgreen: The volunteer position of Gallery Director has changed substantially, in that, the position is only for a year as opposed to ongoing. The current gallery directors are grandfathered until July 2008 and the new gallery directors I bring on will be offset by a couple of months so we aren't rotating a ton of people at the same time, however, I feel this allows a better representation of the community and allowance for a greater number of people to enjoy this experience without making the duration daunting and allowing for negative experiences. There are other changes I will be announcing shortly that I think you will find will enhance the way Artist Relations works for you :)

:bulletgreen: I am currently working line by line through the submission menu set up to find the glitches that are there. Some category links were set up incorrectly and we are aware and fixing them now. Thank you for reporting the errors :)

:bulletgreen: I have noticed and increase in people sending notes to myself or my gallery directors to report policy and copyright violations. Please file help desk tickets for this. My team does not deal directly with violations and it's absolutely necessary to keep running records of instances that occur, so we will direct you back to the help desk to ensure proper protocol. Thank you.

The Key System
As you can see at the very bottom there is a Key System. The way this will work is simple. If you have a specific inquiry or suggestion for a specific department, begin your comment with the appropriate Key Code, that way we can search the page and compile them and address them.

Devious Comments

`Aeires:iconAeires: Jun 16, 2007, 8:18:34 AM
Very sad that when someone has a concern, their comments get hidden on the directors journal page. This new system seems like it's separating the community as people are sent in various directions for AR news instead of getting it in one source. Under the old system, you at least got a glimpse of the areas you may not typically work in as an artist. Now you have to spend more time reading journals instead of one source for news.

Interesting to see directors only for a year now. It should be possible to extend their tour though. If they are doing a great job, the community would most assuredly see them continue. Keep those who are kicking ass in their position. It would also discourage people from getting a short timers attitude and slacking off, or abusing their powers knowing they only have a month or so left to their tour as director.

I see a positive side to the newsletter going this way and it's just something we're trying and we'll see how it goes. The beauty of being flexible. Not to mention that it wasn't just 'someone' it was many many people and this is the community we are supposed to be serving so any attempt to do that better is positive in my eyes.

As for the year, again I believe this to be positive and have had such feedback from the majority of the gallery directors we currently have. Extending is not a possibility back to back but doing multiple stints is. There are several things that come into play here. we get comfortable with the same group of people, it's human nature and that can be a downfall when you have one person trying to represent thousands in a gallery. Having different people certainly helps to bring new life and new representation to that area. I appreciate there are people who seriously kick ass, but extending their time in one duration doesn't necessarily promote that behavior. In fact I would rather see them get back into their lives as artists, this is not a job it's a volunteer position and it comes with many frustrations. I'd like more people to leave this experience on a positive note rather than a negative.

:)

I've read every comment from at least the past 12 or so newsletters. I agree, change was needed, just think this was too drastic to send people all over the place for updates. I think a more condensed, CSS formatted article would have better suited everyones needs in one place. Get rid of the fluff, arrange art horizontally, not vertically, simple things like that to cut down on excessive scrolling. You know where I'm coming from because of our previous conversations. I'm passionate about the news articles, make them leaner and meaner.

Good luck with the new directors, changes were needed and the new people will definitely do a great job. Good points, I'm sure it'll work out.

And I still think it's lame to hide comments on the AR journals. That totally goes against what AR stand for.

Honestly, and this is not to be taken negatively, the newsletter looks soo tiny now! I'm just not used to it. :giggle:

As I have already said on ^guruubii's jounal, I believe this to be a wonderful idea, as it more or less forces the community to become more involved with their respected GD. Not only to they have to actually visit their page, but comments left directly on the journal lead to more interaction, and less mess (I don't know for certain, but I can imagine in the past people's comments being overlooked with questions because of the sheer volume of voices).

Jenn is awesome, and I'm totally giddy with excitement for her! For the umpteenth time, congrats! =D

And the new AR Team changes and enormous! I look forward to the coming months here on dA, they'll definitely be interesting to say the least. I have a feeling that this will create a much more interactive and exciting atmosphere.

I think yearly membership for staff (GDs) is a step in the right direction because it seems to fit nicely with DA's outlook on community, yet I still don't think it will ensure the highest quality many visitors or deviants expect from deviantART.

Yay for Jenn =D

I like the new system. I like reading the comments on the newsletter and it was so irritating to see all the people bitching about the length. AS if they HAD to read the sections that had nothing to do with them.

Also what would have worked was using cuts, if you can in news posts. Thats coulda shrunk it =D

Anyway, I like it =D

It looks so little now. :giggle:

I think the idea of yearly rotation for GD's has the potential to work really well, as long as FAQ #18: Who selects the Daily Deviation and how is it chosen? is kept updated regularly too. ;)

Great work guys.

We can't do CSS in ongoing news articles you're very aware of that. As for reading comments that's great but you aren't seeing my email and notes. I appreciate your feedback but I want to give this a shot, every change deserves a fair shot.

DA has 3.5 million reasons to get CSS working in this news article.
