Bill Sullivan's NYC Subway Turnstile Pictures

^l8:iconl8: reports, 1d 16h ago
Bill Sullivan developed a situation so that various subjects could be defined by the constraints of exactly the same mechanical apparatus. The scenario consisted of someone passing through a subway turnstile. At the moment that the subjects passed through the turnstile, unknown to them, he took their picture stationed at a distance of eleven feet. Bill stood there turning pages of a magazine observing subjects out of the corner of my eye, waiting for only the moment when they pushed the turnstile bar to release the shutter.

His images are fascinating and are inspiring. They encourage us to try something different and when we do it shows what can be achieved.

Better Digital Photography Magazine-Free online

^kkart:iconkkart: reports, 1d 2h ago
From the Publishers of "What Digital Camera" and "Amateur Photographer", IPC Media today has announced a new online photography magazine, "Better Digital Photography" that people can read free and fully online, it is also interactive with embedding video tutorials from the magazine and mouse-over tips. Aimed at the entry and intermediate level photographer, it is heavily devoted to equipment and technique-focused photography content.

From the IPC Media website:

Publishing director Alex Robb says: “This is an exciting and innovative new venture for the photo portfolio. The editorial team have worked incredibly hard to create bespoke content, including technique videos and other interactive content. I am delighted that we have secured distribution to around two million photographers to ensure that as many people as possible benefit from the excellent tips and advice. Better Digital Photography is a further indication of how IPC continues to innovate in this competitive sector.”

Editor Mat Gallagher adds: “We wanted to create a product that helps the reader expand their knowledge, while being easy to use. It is thanks to the talents of art editor Steve Crabb that we have managed to produce such a visually stimulating and accessible magazine that surpasses anything else in the market place.”

My thoughts, this is downright awesome and VERY well done, it is like looking at an actual magazine, but the fact that it has videos embedded within for tips, tutorials, and techniques, make this even better! You can also subscribe for free, via email for upcoming issues, make personal notes within the magazine, and download a copy to your hard drive. GO GET IT!

PHOTOGRAPHY - where have you gone?

~Shace:iconShace: reports, June 26, 2007
Recently journals have been posted that they are looking for new gallery directors here around dA. Personally I think it’s a good idea that they are looking for “fresh blood”, for new people who are willing to spend a lot of their time around dA to support this community and to support art in general.

I was very astonished that they were only looking for one GD in the photography sector – namely the Fetish Gallery.
Throughout the last couple of days I’ve had conversations with people about the development of the photography galleries here on dA. I read journals from other once really active users who complain that there is less and less focus on photography.
If you take a look at the frontpage you rarely find a DD chosen from a photography GD.

There was once a time when every form of art could find its place around deviantART. This seems to have changed. Day by day a lot of talented artists, a lot of talented photographers leave this site because they miss the support and they surely miss the quality of this site.
In my opinion this is really bad, because dA was once a place with quality and big potential.

I’m not blaming single individuals for this. I think that it’s time that they build up a good staff again. A staff which really supports and looks after the galleries. I know that being a GD is a huge responsibility. I know that it involves a lot of work. But still – a GD should be ACTIVE around here.

We used to have numerous of active Photography GD -- `suzi9mm, `garrit, `serpentinekiss and all the others you surely still remember. Take a look at the FAQs if you want to know who is left in the field of photography!

Other members of dA who are not GD have put a lot of effort in this place. They have formed little communities by themselves and I don’t know how you feel about it, but for me, they put more strength and time in this community than others, who probably “should” do this job.

I hope that we will be able to sort out all the difficulties around here and that deviantART will return to its former quality.

It's a pity that photography was lost on deviantart for a long time.

I hope with the newly added Gallery directors this will change.
And i think there are not only for Fetish portraits new GDs added.

here I am dear;)

So, I share, what you wrote above. It'd be great to be a gallery director, but well... For example me - I am "disqualificated" cause of my not well english and also not much time for being here 24h.
I miss `suzi9mm's or `superkev's dd features. I used to suggested few works previously, now I dont have GD to share with works, I think should be a dd.heh...

I never said that you are not paying attention! I was just summarizing the recent development.

As the article says, I'm not blaiming individuals. It's a good thing that you are working on it --- but maybe it would have been nice to post some NEWS that you are aware of the development?
