I was inspired to write this article on my way back from Temple, TX. to see my grandmother and grandfather. We passed suburban houses with animals; dogs, cats, cows and horses. One house had less than half an acer of land, but housed three horses. There was no shelter, no hay, not even grass on the ground they stood on. There were no trees to shield them from the hot sun, easily reaching 110 degrees Fahrenheit on this day. They were all malnourished. Skin and bones. Ribs, hips, and spine all evident. One was an old gelding, one a yearling, and the other an old mare in foal. Now, my step dad, completely oblivious to any animal cruelty in this world, turned to my mother and said, "What was wrong with those horses?" I looked to other way, avoiding the horrifying sight of the dying beasts, while my mother said simply, "They were malnourished."


Animal cruelty, including abandoned, abused, and neglected animals are not the only problems we have in this world, and it is true, this is NOT news. Animal cruelty has been around for ages, and only now are we beginning to do something about it.


An estimate of 2.5 MILLION dogs alone are euthanized each year! Now, that's only dogs, can you imagine how many CATS are euthanized also?

The sad fact about this is, most of those dogs are old, but healthy animals. Once they are past the age of 6 months old, nobody wants them, because why would you get a dog if you could get a puppy? So they are left in cage all their lives, or otherwise, killed because they can't get a home.

There's a simple solution for this, however. If everyone who owned a pet spayed or neutered them, less dogs and cats would be born. If you can't afford to get a cat or dog spayed or neutered, then don't get a pet, or otherwise be a responsible owner and PREVENT them from impregnating an animal or getting pregnant themselves.


I promise you, go down to your local animal shelter and LOOK. You will see what I mean when I say "There are too many animals in our world".
