After some six months in the planning and beta stage,
DeviantWIKI finally launches to the public. It is a Wiki (similar to Wikipedia, using the same MediaWiki platform), a collaborative website that aims to serve as a general knowledge base for DA, its culture and history. Anyone can edit the contents of the site. The site already includes information eg. about many contests, community projects, memes, clubs, notable Deviants, past and current site features and events in the history of the site.
You can - and should - add your own contributions, just remember that we do have quality standards. Poorly written text and articles about unnotable subjects will be removed. That doesn't mean you cannot edit DeviantWIKI without perfect knowledge about English (or Wiki markup), but this is not the wall of a public toilet. We do realize that there vandalism and spam are inevitable in the long run, but we will do our best to eradicate it, and block offenders and protect pages as needed. The good thing about a Wiki is that all previous content can be trivially restored.
We have some special markup, that is the special tag [[dauser:username]]. If you type eg [[dauser:diamondie]], it creates a link to my userpage on DA (instead of my page on DeviantWIKI. You can use pipes to modify the output of this tag, as by default all links start with a capital letter. So [[dauser:diamondie]] would produce a link like this:
Diamondie, but [[dauser:diamondie|diamondie]] would appear as
diamondie.
DeviantWIKI was originally my idea. Of course, there's nothing very original about this idea, and I know there have been some previous projects with the same name, but this one has nothing to do with them. I originally got this idea back in 2005, and proposed it on the Seniors forum at the end of 2006. I'd like to thank `
mirrorkills for hosting the site, =
zacthetoad for the current logo and `
xork for a lot of work, including some bots. Also thanks to eg. `
Rubycored, `
lazybutt, ~
jSepia, `
mangapunksai, `
electricnet and all the others who have contributed so far - and of course to all future contributors. I hope you'll be among them!
Note that DeviantWIKI is not in any way officially affiliated with (or supported or endorsed by) DeviantART. It's an entirely separate project, even though it's related to DA. We have our administration and our own rules, so please don't complain to DA's admins if there's a problem with the Wiki or if you don't like some of the content.
