`SparrowSong on writing, critique and her passions

^lovetodeviate:iconlovetodeviate: reports, September 28
An interview with writer, critic (critiquer?), lit senior, `SparrowSong. Here are some tidbits:

“I like that my passions change. If nothing else, it gives me more to write about.”

“Everyone has heard the expression, ‘Give a man a fish, he eats for a day; teach a man to fish, he eats for a lifetime.’ If you don’t learn to critique, you will always be dependent on others to help you instead of being able to do it by yourself.”

“Art changes how we view the surface of the world to reveal truth or beauty—or both—underneath.”

LITERARY-MINDS - THOUGHTS BEHIND THE POET

~Literary-Minds:iconLiterary-Minds: reports, June 30, 2007
:iconmalicetear: *MaliceTear

How can you tell which word is true?
Maybe its by the way I may say it to you.

Look deeper, into what is hidden behind my words,
Look closer, for what may lie in store.

Let me cry a couple of tears,
see if you can tell.
The difference between the ones of hurt,
and the ones I have been able to sell. Read more...

I hard one to describe without getting to personal. Put simply, it shows a time when I couldn't tell myself from my lies and I wondered if anyone else could.

I hide behind masks I create myself. Manipulating everything to control what I wished.

I am from wanting red hair even in my guilt.
I am from not knowing who saved me when I was already dead.
I am from spilled coke on connivance store counters,
Running from the sticky blame.
From long rides, that were too short,
With velvet curtains that divided me with that.
I am from repeated walks into poles,
Paper cuts in unexpected places,
Of finger blood to bring back Bloody Mary in the dusty bathrooms,
Of white party dresses, that made me a princess with stitches. Read more...

Originally, I had written this for my English coursework. Using the same style, we were instructed to write something about our own memories, of course without being clear. When I finished writing it for the coursework, I went back a few months later and edited it.. Memories are great inspirations.

Face
Bloody eyes,
Muddy face,
Dirty nails,
Chapped lips,
Torn clothes,
A face,
I love. Read more...

I wrote this as lyrics for a song I wanted to compose with a friend. I had watched a stupid program on TV and had once again realized how unrealistic everything is.. So this came
around..

Laced with envy, I cry and weep,
letting the familiar emotion take hold once more.
My eyes—
blurred, and vision becomes obscured.

Shedding this emotion with a tear, I let it fall.
For as this moisture descends,
my ill will is laid bare. Read more...

Six hour layover.
Nothing to do.
The weather turns foul.
The skies are a brew.

The flight was scheduled
at night from the start,
But the weather made flight times
fall completely apart. Read more...

This poem I wrote late late late at night on an airplane. It was the last flight home from a class trip to Spain. It was supposed to be a simple one hour jump from Dulles, VA to Nashville, TN, but the weather had other ideas. I can't sleep on any kind of vehicle if my life depended on it. I just can't, so I looked out the window of the plane, and voila. This poem was born.

My wings are broken.
I'm out of breath.
I'm suffocating.
I'm near my death.

I cannot see
the light of day.
There are no signs
to show the way. Read more...

For six tortuous months, I rode the roller coaster from hell of burnout syndrome... twenty times. This poem is resultant of one of those many mental lows that threatened my life and well-being. In my personal opinion, my best poetry to date was borne of these desperate times in which I had no energy and no capacity to live. All I had was raw will and sheer stubbornness that kept me going... oh, and a few well-written words.

It spews its fire for all to see.
Without it our old world would be,
Lost forever to the sea.

It ruins everything within its reach.
Our crust its fires explosive breach.
Their power Mt. St. Helens preach.

This one I wrote a loooong time ago. It was during an academic team competition in a high school in a nearby town, and I was sitting in the classroom as a reserve during a particular round that I wrote this. What makes this poem unique is the rhyme pattern I used. It's an A-A-A-B-B-B pattern, and the warning in the last line brings the feeling of this poem to home plate. There was no inspiration for this one. It just... happened
