An interview with ex-GD, writer, editor, fascinating person: `GeneratingHype. Here are some tidbits from the interview (which I recommend reading in full):

"Letters presuppose a sort of authenticity, and I truly believe that a story—no matter the form—needs to be authentic and believable.

"Sometimes I wish I had stories such as "I wrote my first published poem at three and a half!" or "I started writing stories at two!", but writing never came easy for me and is still not very easy for me.

The Use of Adverbs in Fiction Writing

=DarcKnyt:iconDarcKnyt: reports, August 29
Adverbs are the endangered species of the adult fiction world. They're frowned on like putting a Baby Ruth bar in a punch bowl at a wedding reception -- not a good idea. They're also indicative of weak writing ... but why? This article covers why adverbs are evil and what you can do to avoid using them.

Winning Entries!!

First Place - The Easter Journal by ~Term-the-Schmuck

A beautiful well composed work of fiction on a very important historical event in Irish history. The Easter Journal details the events of the Easter Rising between the Irish Volunteers and Citizen Army through the eyes of a soldier on the opposing side, the Irish Republican Brotherhood. A fine piece to read before you go to Ireland if you're a history buff or just like to map out your descendants.

Second Place - Legendary by *saturnangel

Legendary, sure does sum up this amazing piece on American Punk Culture in the USA. The writer goes to state many different locales where punk rock originated, detailed the various legends from the Ramones, the Clash, Misfits, etc. and view them from the eyes of one person. An intelligent and informative piece to read from *saturnangel

Third Place - Un Quetzal by =Hexaditidom

The best poem in the competition, since it literally "taught" you about the culture and location. Set in Guatemala, the writer artistically teaches us about the currency, language, religion, and a known tourist spot for you adventurous travelers. Quite symbolical and indirect piece that captures the memories of his travels.

Honourable Mention - African Child by *MaskedVengeance

Kudos to the thoughtfulness and respect of this writer to bring awareness to Africa in his short work of factual information brought to light with a purpose to help those in need.

Conclusion

Thanks to all who participated, it was a rough contest to judge and I thank *fllnthblnk and *Amalgamadora for their wonderful expertise in narrowing the list down to three selections. I've learnt so much from your writings than I did in High School geography and history. This concludes the summer contest on my side, I'm sure I'll think of another in the Fall sometime. Congrats to all!
