"Letters presuppose a sort of authenticity, and I truly believe that a story—no matter the form—needs to be authentic and believable.

"Sometimes I wish I had stories such as "I wrote my first published poem at three and a half!" or "I started writing stories at two!", but writing never came easy for me and is still not very easy for me.

The Use of Adverbs in Fiction Writing

=DarcKnyt:iconDarcKnyt: reports, August 29
Adverbs are the endangered species of the adult fiction world. They're frowned on like putting a Baby Ruth bar in a punch bowl at a wedding reception -- not a good idea. They're also indicative of weak writing ... but why? This article covers why adverbs are evil and what you can do to avoid using them.

PoetryBattle's "Battle of Opposition" Contest!

*PoetryBattles:iconPoetryBattles: reports, July 23, 2007
*PoetryBattles is getting ready to kick start its rebirth, and what better way than by hosting a contest! Before we go into details on the contest, you may be wondering just what *PoetryBattles is.

Here's the rundown:

The Battles:
*PoetryBattles is a lit-based project set in a chatroom. We use a word, a quote, a theme, a picture, or anything else we can think of to inspire two poets to write. We give them a set time limit and let their creative juices flow! The poems are submitted straight into the chat for our staffed judges to pick the best one.

Types of Battles:
We have two types of battles: Official Battles and Unofficial Battles also known as Exhibition Battles. Official Battles are used to advance your rank, whereas Unofficial Battles are for practice or fun.

The Workshop:
We will also have a workshop for Battle produced poems, so that the rough edges of our scribbled insta-poetry can be revised into poems worthy of confident showcasing!

Now to the contest

We've got the history lesson out of the way, so here are the contest details:

The Theme

“A subject for a great poet would be God's boredom after the seventh day of creation.” by Friedrich Nietzsche. **

Friedrich Nietzsche did a nice job presenting us poets with this quote. For the first part of the contest, you will need to write a poem based around this quote of any length and format.

But, that's just the start of things!

Once you've finished that poem, you have to write a contrasting poem based over the following topic:

"...God's boredom after the seventh day of creation...and why he will eventually choose to destroy it..." **

The Prizes

:bulletred: First Place: 3 month Sub, Issue of Mimesis 2, Journal/News Feature, Rank Advancement.

:bulletred: Second Place: 1 month Sub, Journal/News Feature, Rank Advancement.

:bulletred: Third Place: 1 month Sub, Journal/News Feature.

Submission Rules

:bulletred: Include both poems in a single deviation and note *PoetryBattles with your submission with "Contest" as the subject.

:bulletred: There are no regulations regarding format or length, so be creative!

:bulletred: Deadline for submissions will be 12:00am CST on August 23rd. *PoetryBattles will open for full operation when the winners are announced!

For more information about *PoetryBattles please pay a visit to the page and browse the journals! Oh, and we are currently accepting staff applications as well!

Good luck to all!

**These are in no way meant to present religious beliefs, but merely to inspire the writers and to base a contest over.

This will be a strain, but I will do it.

I apologise in advance if I write anything that is extremely hurtful to anyone religious.

I'd apply for staff, but I am afraid that I am extremely biased when it comes to poetry, if it isn't written in a way that I like, no matter how good it is, I just wont like it = P
