reports, July 29, 2007I keep seeing fan artists on DA breaking the rules in several cases. As fan artists, we should be understanding what DA does and doesn't allow when it comes to fan art.
So, I have collected a few rules that I've seen artists ignore/be ignorant of. These are important, so please take a moment to look at them. I've even included a quick summarization of these rules.
FAQ #9: Can I just take deviantART submissions and use them elsewhere?
In other words: Ask permission. Some folks will ha blog capability enabled, and you can use the pasty thing, but otherwise ASK. NO EXCEPTIONS.
FAQ #63: What is the policy regarding preview images used for literature submissions?
In other words: Screenshots are NOT acceptable preview images.
FAQ #306: Does "Crediting" let me use whatever I want?
In other words: credit isn't enough folks. You need permission to use somebody's art.
FAQ #502: Can I submit 'Dolls' or 'Characters' which I made on certain websites?
In other words: Dolls belong to scraps only, and only if the site allows you to use them on other websites. Don't put them in your regular gallery unless you made them on your own, from scratch. And by that I mean you drew it on your own, not you added the clothes on your own.
FAQ #614: What are the rules for the use of music and sound effects in a Flash animation?
On other words: Copyrighted music: Just don't do it.
FAQ #578: What does deviantART consider to be a proper screenshot?
In other words: It's not a desktop screenshot to just post a wallpaper/screenshot from a show/game you found.
FAQ #554: Is my deviation Mature Content?
In other words: YES, THIS DOES EXSIST, SO USE IT.
And here are the rules I see ignored the most.
FAQ #572: What does deviantART consider "Fan Art" to be?
In other words: Recolored screenshots or stuff using screenshots is NOT OKAY. Fan Art must be entirely drawn by you unless you have permission from the original artist. This goes for using other's fan art and using screenshots. Recoloring a screenshot doesn't make it okay either.
FAQ #249: What is the policy concerning images depicting minors?
In other words: You can't draw sexual images involving child characters. This counts fan art too. I see this rule ignored a TON with anime art. Seriously, pairing art tends to break this rule a TON.
