What a Vexel Is: The Official dA Definition

reports, July 7Influenced by recent dispute, it has been decided that it is time to make a solidified definition of what a vexel is by deviantART's terms. Please understand that this definition, and the rules along with it, are not made up from a few of the gallery moderator's thoughts, but built from the foundation of what the creator's words on 'vexel' were, and what the majority of the vexel community of deviantART has come to accept as a vexel. These rules are solid, final, and most-likely will not be faltered.

Hello everyone!
The purpose of article is to raise awareness of the unrestricted stock accounts on deviantART and explore other ways stock may be utilized.
Unrestricted stock can be used for both personal and commercial projects. You are not required to obtain permission prior to using the stock off site and the only requirements are that the stock provider be notified and credited.
Note: Before I go further, I want to make it clear that "restricted" or stock with more stringent rules is not more or less desirable than unrestricted stock. There is a large audience for stock that is only available to people on deviantART or requires permission prior to being used off site. There are many reasons why people may not offer their stock unrestricted. For example, my own stock account is not unrestricted because I have photographs taken at a historical site.
On deviantART, we typically think of stock being used in digital works or as reference, but there are many other ways that stock can be used, such as:
- Websites, journals and banners
- Literary tags and images
- Advertising, publishing
- Games, packaging, electronic media, etc.
I think unrestricted stock accounts are great resources for these types of projects. Here are a few artists that offer unrestricted stock and small sample of their work.

I'm sure there are many, many more accounts on deviantART offering unrestricted stock. If you or someone you know is one of them, please send me a note. I have started a directory of these accounts and will help promote them. To keep things from becoming overly complicated, I am only including accounts where all of the images are unrestricted. I am taking this more conservative route to avoid misunderstandings.
