I'd like to remind everyone that we only DD from the traditional art gallery. That means the first category has to be Traditional art. This does not include sub categories such as "manga/anime>traditional art..." Please send all your Manga/Anime DD suggestions to ^
RockGirl1582 or ^
azarath. Also, please send your Artisan crafts Suggestions to ^
dedredhed.
I also urge everyone to read this AR update. It contains tons of information about the Animation category that is essential for you to know. Animation is my passion and it pains me to see that category get so horribly abused. Until file restrictions are in place, education is my only weapon.
In case you've been under a rock for the past month or so, I have been posting news!
please check out The traditional Deviant features
Vol.1 and
Vol.2!
Also check out
Vol.1 of From the Pencilbox!

I am happy to say that Printing is once again a separate category and it is no longer wrongfully contained within Typography. I am sure all Printmakers will be thankful of $
Moonbeam13 and the IT Team's efforts
on improving and correcting the Submission Process. This will also prevent many miscats from happening again

If you like Tattooing or are just curious about what can it achieve as an art form, check out the article
Inkredible Feature #1 - Full Color Tattoos. I'm open for suggestions for issue #2 - Black & Grey Tattoos, and this time you can suggest yourself, so show me what you've got! (only tattoo artists may apply, thank you). If you don't want to miss out on this and other upcoming Traditional Gallery Features, Articles and Interviews, be sure to add ^
stigmatattoo to your devwatch!
^truemarmalade - Street art
Alright, so, one would think that defining "street art" would be nice and straightforward, right? I mean, the two words pretty much define themselves and everyone who's been through elementary school can do simple addition and put the two together. I'm going to take a couple issues of this article to explain what street art is in this modern day and age, and what it means on deviantART.
You'd assume that the art portion of street art is the most important. Obviously someone who's been writing graffiti all their life will be able to put together a better piece than someone who just bought a can of paint on a whim. However the location you choose to paint is also something that needs to be taken into consideration.
Think about how many people will see this particular spot on a day-to-day basis. Is it along a busy highway where commuters will sit in traffic and wander their eyes about the landscape? Or did you pick a hidden secluded wall under a bridge that's a mile walk down a dirt path through the woods..? I hope that common sense is kicking in at this point.
Picking the busiest spot in the city isn't always the best idea though. Looking over your shoulder every 3.67 seconds while painting will greatly decrease the amount of enjoyment you get out of vandalizing property that isn't yours.
Oh, about that property that isn't yours. There are rules for this whole game of writing your name where you shouldn't. No houses of worship, small modes of transportation (anything but semi's or trains or buses), small businesses, or places of residence; ever. Go for the big corporations over anything small. They can afford the cleanup easier than any mom and pop owned place.
Also, and this should be obvious, don't go over anything that is better than what you're putting up. So basically for the first six months or so, don't go over anything; ok? You definitely don't want to start beef with any writer that might have a crew or even a few friends behind him.
That just about wraps up the "where" portion of street art, in a nutshell. Next time around I'll talk about certain techniques and styles that you can use to get started in street art.
