Izmir, historically Smyrna, is the third most populous city of Turkey and the country's largest port after İstanbul. It is located in the Gulf of İzmir, by the Aegean Sea. It is the capital of İzmir Province. The city of İzmir is composed of 9 metropolitan districts. These are Balçova, Bornova, Buca, Çiğli, Gaziemir, Güzelbahçe, Karşıyaka, Konak and Narlıdere. Each district, and often also the neighborhoods within, possesses distinct features and a particular temperament. The 2000 population of this urban zone was 2,409,000 and the 2005 estimate is 3,500,000.
The city hosts an international arts festival during June/July, and İzmir International Fair, one among the city's many fair and exhibition events, is held in the beginning of September every year. It is served by national and international flights through Adnan Menderes Airport and there is a modern rapid transit line running Southwest to Northeast. İzmir hosted the Mediterranean Games in 1971 and the World University Games (Universiade) in 2005. It has a running bid submitted to BIE to host the Universal Expo 2015, which will be voted in 2008. Modern İzmir also incorporates the nearby ancient cities like Ephesus, Pergamon, Sardis and Klazomenai, and centers of international tourism such as Kuşadası, Çeşme and Foça.
Alsancak is a large quarter in İzmir, Turkey, within the boundaries of the metropolitan district of Konak, the historic center of the city.
As a notional zone, Alsancak extends along the southern shores of the tip of the Gulf of İzmir, starting from the historic square that carries the same name as the district (Konak Square) and the 19th century Pasaport Quai in close distance, stretching along a three km long seaside street and promenade (Kordon) and finally to adjoin Bornova, another metropolitan district of İzmir in the Gulf's end.
Kemeraltı is İzmir's -Turkey - historic market (bazaar) district. It was originally formed around the street surrounding the shallow inner bay of the city, which was filled in due course during the 17th century, availing the bazaar to be extended to a wider area. The street, that traces a wide curve and called today as Anafartalar Street (Caddesi), and known historically as the Street of the Mevlevis, in reference to the presence of a "dergah" situated by the street, constitutes the principal axis of Kemeraltı. The district covers a vast area extending from the level of the Agora of Smyrna (the quarters of Namazgah, Mezarlıkbaşı and İkiçeşmelik), to the seashore along the Konak Square. It remains one of the liveliest parts of İzmir.
Karşıyaka is a large district within the metropolitan area of İzmir and situated on the Aegean Sea coast along the northern shore of the tip of the Gulf of İzmir.
Karşıyaka borders an industrial zone and a shipyard to the east, and a large forest area to the north. The ancient site of Old Smyrna (the city prior to 333 BC) is located within Karşıyaka's depending zone of Bayraklı that protrudes towards Bornova plain in the east. The city is an important business and commercial center. It is connected to İzmir center by rail, road, and commuter ferry. The ferry trip takes approximately 15 minutes from Karşıyaka quay.
