DENYING THE POVERTY DRAFT-THE SOLDIER AS A SYMBOL

=whitetrashpalace:iconwhitetrashpalace: reports, July 9
The Poverty Draft, Politics, Symbols, and the inconvenience of being human.

Even in times of war, the Soldier as an individual is of no consequence. The Soldier is a symbol, a simple pawn in a culture war. The Soldier is either a villain, or a Hero. The Soldier always serves for the honor of his country, not his paycheck. The Soldier is faithful, as there are 'no atheists in the trenches'. The Soldier is Combat Arms. The Soldier is male, he married a young white girl, and he has a baby on the way, whom he has never met.

The Soldier is a romantic ideal.

The Senioritis Epidemic

`Nestalgica:iconNestalgica: reports, August 3, 2007
Because we haven't had an insane amount of fractal artists submitting news articles lately...

And I'm not talking about the mental condition (also known as the 'Extreme Laziness Syndrome';) you acquire in your last year of high school.

But senior members on dA seem to be appearing in droves lately, metamorphosing from meek little users, subscribers, and beta testers. Just in the past 30 days alone, there have been an astonishing number of deviants who have climbed into the ranks of seniority. Now, some of these people truly deserve their tics, as they've tirelessly served the community in a positive manner for some time. Some have just served the community in a positive manner.

What's the difference, and why is `Nestalgica bringing this up? Why should we listen to him?

I've silently observed the manner and methods in which seniority is awarded over the past year or so, and I've seen two ways: You can step down or be removed from official staff, or you can "earn" it, and that second one's definition has varied greatly.

But what comes from senior status on dA? Nothing. No responsibilities beyond keeping yourself presented as mature. Just a little ` on the left side of your name that's supposed to signify a lasting commitment to the betterment of dA. And maybe the admiration of the non-seniors. And envy. I know I've felt that before, the envy: wish I could be a senior member, I thought. I wish I could be like them: mature, respected, admired maybe. Community involvement would be key.

I don't profess to know the inner workings of the admins' minds, or the motives behind their actions, but often I wonder just what compelled them to do that. I've never seen that artist actually do anything for the community, I would think, not anything beyond their posting of amazing art, at least Their merit for seniority was inspirational pieces, submitted over a span of years on dA, which I think is a fairly valid reason, but it's something very unjudgeable. How can one judge how much an artist inspired another?

My point is this: I don't think single instances of brilliance and community involvement, or long periods of very small, intangible contributions should constitute worthiness of seniority. I think consistently extraordinary commitment to dA as a whole, be it in a certain gallery, or in the dAmn, or in journals, comments, what have you, should set off a light in the admins' minds that "Yes, this person does deserve the tic, the respect, and the 'responsibilities' bestowed upon senior members."

I'm not trying to tell the admins how to do their jobs, and I'll keep my opinions to myself regarding the choices, but I think there needs to be more consistency in the decisions made.

In the end, I want to be looked at by the art I make and the stories I write, not by the symbol in front of my name.

"I'm not trying to tell the admins how to do their jobs, and I'll keep my opinions to myself regarding the choices, but I think there needs to be more consistency in the decisions made."

So, what exactly was the purpose of this article? If you're not going to offer a better way of doing things, or put yourself out there for your opinions to be discussed, is there really any point being made here? I have nothing against you personally, you know that as well as I do, so this isn't a flame. I'm just curious as to why you chose this to be news, rather than a journal, or a forum post that might generate more useful discussion.

My question as well... though I suppose that more people will see news articles, rather than journals or forum posts.

Dude...

here's the deal. you might not know why a senior was given senior status; it's not your job to know that. that is the admin's job. if a deviant was given senior status it is because the staff here thought they deserved it. you do not see as much as the staff do, and you should not judge seniors based on what you think. seeing as you are a newly appointed senior i would think that you might have an understanding of that--that you might have people questioning whether you deserved it.

take a look at the senior forum... read around a bit.

You haven't kept your opinions to yourself, you've essentially come out and said that there are people who you feel do not deserve their seniorship. And frankly, considering you've only just got yours, it's disgusting. Nobody knows why people get seniorship for a reason: because there is no desire for there to be a check list so people can tick it off and then bitch that they haven't got it.

You've been fortunate enough to be given seniorship, quit bitching and just be pleased for other people.

If you do not wish to bear the burden of your senior symbol let me know and that can be rectified.
This recently was an issue in the seniors forums and frankly the attitude is somewhat insulting to your fellow seniors and is grossly presumptuous.
You don't know why some people are made seniors, and while you may not have an idea others and myself do, and so do their peers who recommended them.

Also, this is a community of now 5 million people, and there are less than a 1000 seniors over 7 years. So it is not something that is given out on a whim or like candy.
