Literature Gallery Update - #13

*litNEWS:iconlitNEWS: reports, August 6, 2007
:salute: Welcome to litACTIONnews, with your reporter, er-- *litNEWS! We're here live, bringing you the good word from our GDs, current contests, and other useful tidbits for your writing needs.

From the Desk of the GDs

:icongunshymartyr: - ^GunShyMartyr

I'd make a Tom Tucker joke but I don't think everyone would get it.

-

So this is our first monthly news update. We used to have LGUs, but we wanted to have a feature that we could update regularly that we could all add to separately. Consider this the new LGU, only with a fancy CSS journal as well as a news article.

We decided to go from two Literature DDs a day to one. We'll all be featuring both prose and poetry, except ^PoeticWar, who is huddling in the corner clinging to his poems. We hope this might give the one DD more exposure and attention rather than two. We'll see how it turns out.

Probably the biggest news that's happened lately is the addition of PDF uploads for literature. I know this has been a long time coming and people have been waiting for it, so I'm really glad that it's finally here. To upload a PDF, simply select your Literature category (Prose -> General Fiction, for example) and then Add File. Select your PDF file and voila, your PDF is up and ready to go. I think the PDF format looks a lot more professional and is much easier to read, so take advantage of it. There are programs and websites online that will convert your word docs to PDF if you don't have a text program that can do it. If you have any questions or problems, don't hesitate to throw a note my way.

Lastly, there will be a site-wide contest to celebrate dA's birthday. We'll be posting the details and journals about it soon, so keep an eye out for that. I hope you'll take the lit-section with Pride. ;P

:iconstjoan: - ^StJoan

Poetry > Experimental > Typographical now accepts images and so you no longer have to struggle with dA's dodgy formatting, you can simple edit the text in an image program to your liking and upload it to the proper category. This means we would appreciate is people started to move their typographical poetry out of visual poetry and into the proper category.

Older deviations will not be affected.

:bulletred: The results for the Mythic Prose Competition, as judged by novelist Chris Farnell, should be announced soon.

:bulletred: For a few weeks now the Lit forum rules thread has been updated. We recommend you familiarize yourself with any changes by clicking here.

:bulletred: The poetry journal Mimesis recently published its second issue, which includes many poets from dA. Check out the news article.

News From the Gallery

Current Contests:

:bulletblue: It's a(nother) Summer Writing Contest! This one is being held by *resuki and is based on a concept similar to *fotoFRIDAY and =VisualLit. Check out the article and make sure to have your entries in by 24 August 2007.

:bulletblue: To celebrate *fotoFRIDAY's first birthday, they are putting on a contest of massive proportions! Both photographers and writers are encouraged to participate by submitting a piece of writing or a photo based on their prompt of: progress. See the fotoFRIDAY news article for more details. Contest closes August 31st.

:bulletred: *FelixT, one of the founders of *WritersForArt, is hosting his first poetry contest: Solitude. You have until 1 September 2007 to get your entries in, so that should be plenty of time to write something amazing.</div>

:bulletred: It's time for another Monthly Lit Challenge with `pickledeer! This month your challenge is to write a fantasy story based in a simple room. Hmm, that does sound challenging! You can find more details in his article here. All entries are due by September 2nd.

:bulletred: *Beccalicious's contest, Games and Darkness is a contest open to all genres of art, including poetry and prose, asking contestants to combine the themes of darkness and games into a single deviation. You have until September 5th, 2007 to enter this contest!

:bulletred: The Think Pink Contest II, hosted by breast cancer survivor `JunkbyJen, begins accepting entries on 5 July 2007. You have until 30 September 2007 to get your submissions in, and all medias are allowed, so be sure to make a huge Lit contribution. `JunkbyJen will donate ten cents to Breast Cancer reasearch for every entry (one per person)!

 Is there a lit contest going on that you don't see here? Note *litNEWS to see your contest on our listings!

The addition of pdf's is pretty snazzy. I'll have to see if I can figure out how to work them. Good update. :)

Are you ready to jump? :music:
:iconabcat:
Just as an aside, the typographical category is not currently accepting written deviations.
I'm talking currently with $hexentanz about this, and hopefully it will be welcoming for both types of submission soon. :~)

Hey hey, thank you for the competition exposure!

I'm a little sad to see there will be even less literature DD's, although I understand the reasoning behind it.
