Your mother hates them,("Not while you live under MY roof!!!!!"), for years they've been a stigma of bikers, sailors, harlots and rock'n effin' roll. But now, no one can deny the artistic value and popularity that tattoos have gained in the past few years.
A Brief History
They have been rites of passage, personal mementos and drunken mistakes, not bad for a practice that dates back to neolithic Eurasia. The means are different from region to region, but the end result is the same; gorgeous art that marks the skin forever. Sailors and Pirates in the late 1700's are responsible for bringing the practice to the masses of Europe and the Americas, and has been the mark of the sea faring for ages. The popularity of tattooing really spread during the first and second world war with the men serving in the armed forces marking their adventure, making the birth of what's now known as "traditional" or "old school" tattoos. Then came rock and roll. Fast forward to 2005 and mainstream television reality TV with shows like "
Inked" and "
Miami Ink" and while a debate rages on in the industry on whether the shows do more good than damage (i.e., walking into the shop and getting inked within 5 minutes) none can disagree that they have helped the art of tattooing to a never-been-seen before level.
