Full Steam Ahead!

^Kitten-of-Woe:iconKitten-of-Woe: reports, October 1
Steampunk is more than a "look" -- it's a growing subculture that may have started in the 1980s and the word itself may have been coined by the science fiction writer K.W. Jeter. It usually revolves around sci-fi, fantasy, and the Victorian era after the advent of steam power, but with many present-day high-tech devices either modded to simply look Victorian-made or built entirely from scratch. But if you think Steampunk is only about fashion, then think again, because many things like computer keyboards and guitars have been modded and Steampunked for quite some time now!

Astounding Alexandrite

~SoulStoneDesigns:iconSoulStoneDesigns: reports, August 7, 2007
Alexandrite is a stone with a lot of mystique. Rare and expensive, this gemstone changes color from greens or blues to purples, magentas, and reds based not on the angle of the light, but the actual light temperature itself. It is the lesser-known June birthstone, and difficult to find in sizes over one carat weight. The stone was originally found in Russia, and named after the Czar Alexander, as the royalty found its green-to-red color change to match their own house colors. While there are other color-changing stones out there (Andalusite is another color-change chrysoberyl), I find that none are as mesmerizing as alexandrite.

I wanted to start out, not with jewelry, but with this great snapshot from :iconkeyla-etc: that really shows off the color change in these stones:

Here we have a gorgeous ring with three (!) sumptuous alexandrites from :iconcafeblanc:

Next is a pendant with a fantastic design by :iconwinnekmetal: - look closely for the alexandrite accents:

Peacocks and alexandrite? Yes please! By :iconyogarasu: :

A lab-grown stone in a funky setting by :iconnoformdesign: :

Alexandrites serve as accents for an amazing opal pendant by :iconjessa1155: :

And finally, alexandrite shines as the centerpiece in this lovely beaded necklace by :iconartisticauras: :

I'd love to feature more, but that's how rare this stone is - even on deviantART it's hard to find!

It's nice to learn a thing or two about stones, and having such beautiful examples definitely doesn't hurt. ^..^

My high school ring is from Alexandrite... I got mine from a differeent company than most of the other people in my class. My classmates who got alexandrite got lower-quality stones that don't change color, so some of them were jealous!

I always thought it interesting how it is the stone for June... Cancer begins in June, Cancer's planet being the moon, the moon changes its shape... the other stone for June being Pearl, which is also reminiscent of the moon... makes you wonder how much thought went into some of these things!

If I ever decide to get married to heck with a diamond, this is what I want in my ring (if I decide to get a ring with a stone at all... not sure yet...)

My own wedding ring has an alexandrite; I really only like diamonds as accent stones ;) I think alex is perfect for the Cancer stone, being a Cancer myself!
