Who doesn't know giraffes? Every little child knows that a giraffe is that spotted animal with a long neck. Giraffes have another uniqueness: one is their tongue, which is muscular and half a meter long. They use it for grabbing branches from the top of the trees to their mouth. Why do they actually have such long necks?

The reason for this curiosity is probably the fact that they live in Africa, thus on a continent where most herbivore mammals of the world live. And in order for everyone to have enough nutrients, they had to focus somehow - and giraffes can reach to places which are not accessible to other animals - to the top if the trees, thanks to their long neck.
Even through their long necks giraffes have the same number of cervical as normal vertebrates - seven. They have special valves in their neck arteries which pre-empts the quick rush of blood from their head back to their heart by the influence of the earth's gravitational pull. Giraffes also need very little sleep - they need even less than half an hour of sleep at night!! (I wish I could do that too). And another interesting thing about giraffes is that they are pregnant for around 475 days!!
