AGTA urges members to check irradiated blue topaz

~SoulStoneDesigns:iconSoulStoneDesigns: reports, August 12, 2007
This is the original story: AGTA urges members to check irradiated blue topaz

An update from the US Nuclear Regulatory Commission here shows that the alarm may be a little overblown, but it can't hurt to be too careful! Certain companies have put a freeze on sales of London Blue topaz until this issue is cleared up.

Yeah, I didn't even hear about this until Friday night! And I've got some London blues in my collection that I'm giving the evil eye at the moment.

I'd heard of antique jewelry dealers coming across radioactive diamonds before, but this is a new and startling discovery! I always did have a little bit of suspicion about all the irradiated topaz on the market.

This explains much. I went to a gem and mineral show yesterday. A couple of the vendors mentioned that certain of their wares were not radioactive, and I wondered why. Now I know.

This particular show has changed a lot since I last went. The latest one was about half readers and healers (auras, crystal vibrations, Lemurian configurations, etc.), and much of the rest was also newage. Lybian desert glass marked up 1000%. Quartz double points with a slice of dichroic glass in the middle for a play of color (_very_ pretty!). Only a couple of traditional gemstone and mineral sellers.

Wow, never been to a show like that. I'm usually as much of a purist as I can be, given all the common treatments on the market, but I have to admit that the quartz and dichro combination really sounds attractive!

I'd love to have a bunch, but they were in one of the "if you have to ask the price, you can't afford it" booths.
