7 Ingredients Of Good Corporate Design

`manicho:iconmanicho: reports, 2d 14h ago
A great article at Smashing Magazine that every designer should check. If you're into Coroporate Design, I'm sure you will find this info really useful.

It’s hard to define design. We have a broad range of definitions to choose from: design refers not only to graphic design, but to design strategy, too. It is used in a variety of industries, such as engineering, architecture and Web design.

This means that design is not just graphical in nature (which is a form of visual artistic representation), but also the planning of processes to achieve certain goals. Large corporations clearly understand this and incorporate every form of design into their strategy to achieve success.
For a good corporate design, we need to be aware of two main elements, which can be further broken down into a total of seven “ingredients”.

Making Mac Icons with Icon Composer.

~fo-ur:iconfo-ur: reports, August 14, 2007
Not many people know about Icon Composer, the pre-installed icon-making tool for Mac OS X. Finding it is a little hard, but it is a small yet dedicated icon-making program that saves in the standard .icns format.

Installation of the Xcode Tools
The Xcode Tools, or Developer Tools, are complicated developer programs included with Mac OS X. Many are best not to use unless you are aware of the correct procedure. However, there are some 'gems', including IconComposer itself.

The Xcode Tools should be on one of the OS X installation CDs or DVDs. In a new copy of OS X 10.4 Tiger, the Install Disc 1 contains a folder called 'Xcode Tools'. Open this folder and double-click on 'Xcode Tools.mpkg'. Follow the instructions to install. It is not recommended that you install the Xcode Tools if you have less than 2GB of space on disk.

In earlier versions of OS X, the Xcode Tools may be referred to as Developer Tools. If they are not obvious components on an Install Disc, search for the 'Developer Tools' to find the installation package.

Finding IconComposer
You should now have a 'Developer' folder on your hard disk. Double-click on this folder, then on 'Applications', and then on 'Utilities' to find Icon Composer. Open the program and a window should appear. (If one does not, click 'New'.)

Creating Icons
Drag an image from a Finder window into the largest box in the bottom left corner of the Icon Composer window. For best results, the image should be 128 x 128, or at least square. If a dialog box appears, click 'Use scaled version'.

If you have a smaller version of the same image, use this in the next box. Otherwise drag the image from the bigger box into the smaller box. Always drag from big to small, or the bigger images will be pixellated. Click 'Use scaled version' if the option appears, and then click 'Extract Mask'.

Continue dragging images to smaller boxes. It is always best to use a small version of the original image in smaller boxes rather than the images itself, so if you have smaller versions, use these in the smaller boxes. Keep going until all boxes are filled. (Some boxes on the right may be plain white, but as long as you have clicked 'Extract Mask' whenever the opportunity has presented itself, this is fine.)

Saving Icons
It is not possible to edit an icon once it has been saved. Choose File>Save as usual, do not check the box 'Go into application bundles' and save the icon. It is now saved in the standard .icns format.

OMG, why? You have just to make your icon on Photoshop, save it as PNG and convert it with GraphicConverter!

Either that,
or Photoshop + png comverter,
or Pixadex + Candybar.

The last 2 are shareware but by a lot cheaper than Photpshop and take a lot less space than said 2GB, and are VERY easy to use: Pixadex for managing your png files, and Candybar for on-the-fly converting and applying the pngs right into your system (including an easy restore).

I wonder if Icon Composer will run without the rest of the Developer Tools installed? I don't see why it shouldn't. Users who don't use the rest of the (awesome) Developer Tools package could use Pacifist to install just the Icon Composer.

As a side note, the Developer Tools takes up a lot less space if you choose not to install the documentation. The docs take up most of the space (my Developer folder only uses 108MB of space without the docs).

Given that e^(Pi)i + 1 = 0 , rationalise "i". You have 30 seconds starting from now.

You can probably use the advanced installation to install the bare minimum if you need to.

And some people need the documentation if they want to understand the Developer Tools...ahem.
