8 Issues of NME for Just £1 My Chemical Romance: The Black Parade
They're back, in black, but not as you know them
You may want to sit down. We have some very upsetting news. My Chemical Romance are dead. And so is their friend 'The Patient'. There was nothing that anybody could do.
Confused? Readers, the confusion hasn't even started. 'The Black Parade' is an ostentatious concept-album-cum-rock-opera about death, and it's about to turn the late MCR into the biggest band on the planet. The most obvious reference point is Green Day's 'American Idiot', not just because both projects share a record label, producer, video director and an A&R department, but because it's a piece of work that will challenge every preconception you ever had about the people who made it.
To recap, My Chemical Romance's previous two albums have been one long horror story; 'I Brought You My Bullets, You Brought Me Your Love' and 'Three Cheers For Sweet Revenge' tells the story of two criminal 'demolition lovers' who are gunned down in the desert after their hometown is overrun by vampires. Then the boy makes a deal with Satan for the lives of him and his lover Helena in exchange for the souls of a thousand evil men. 'A meditation,' says Gerard Way, 'on immortality. And this [new album] is a meditation on mortality.'
'The Black Parade' unfolds in the physical realm; with no eternal zombie afterlife to cushion things when the day comes. Our story begins in the cancer ward (nice), with the tragic, young death of our protagonist, an average Joe known simply as The Patient. And so the first song (after the introduction, called 'The End'

is called 'Dead!' the pre-title sequence, if you will. And straightaway, we're on brave new ground musically as well 'a crisp, vast, and fiercely melodic kind of stadium punk that is barely emo in the slightest. Actually, its closest parallel is 'Holiday' from 'American Idiot'. But by getting that out of the way first, they then divert from their Green Day mentors, blasting into power-duo tracks 'This Is How I Disappear' and 'The Sharpest Lives', both showing off this band's new richness of depth and texture in glorious 3D-technicolour. As The Patient enters the tunnel of light we hit critical mass with 'Welcome To The Black Parade' and things begin to unfold. Gerard apparently believes that when the reaper comes, it comes in the form of your life's most vivid memory. Now, the point is that The Patient died before he got the chance to really achieve anything, so his most vivid memory is as a child, when his father took him to the city to see a marching band. And the rest of the album soundtracks The Patient's life flashing before his eyes, and it turns out to be a lot more colourful and varied a flashback than he was expecting. And this is where 'The Black Parade's genius reveals itself. MCR have moved so far from the emo sound you know, that they've even renamed their band for this album. Under their new guise of The Black Parade, the group have the freedom to adopt whatever clothes, styles or ideas are necessary to tell each chapter. If there is an overarching style it is of all things musical theatre.
The first truly staggering moment is 'I Don't Love You' (this album's 'Boulevard Of Broken Dreams'

, which sounds like Keane would if they had any edge and loads of big rock guitars. 'House Of Wolves', debuted at Reading, is the least startling, mainly because it pre-empts 'Cancer', the song most likely to get the newspapers' backs up. A short bridging sequence, it's their first ever stab at total, pin-drop sensitivity. Just Gerard and a piano, it's a first-person account of death from cancer that packs an emotional punch so devastating and graphic that you could never call it rock'n'roll ' isn't that meant to be fun? But MCR want to surpass rock'n'roll: it pushes the boundaries of taste about as far as they'll go, but a daily listen is going to be just an effective way of making people stop smoking as the Allen Carr book. The mood then lightens with 'Mama', a vaudeville riot that manages to out-Gogol Bordello Gogol Bordello, made even more overwhelming thanks to Liza Minelli's showstopping cameo as Mama herself. If things are getting a little too theatrical, then 'Sleep' gives us the big body-builder Tool moment and punches their heavy metal card; if only once, because next they have to reinvent Status Quo as Roxy Music on 'Teenagers'; another amazing boxfresh MTV smash. 'Disenchanted' is the calm scene gearing up for a preposterous finale; which comes with 'Famous Last Words', where The Black Parade revert back to My Chemical Romance, stepping back into narrator mode, both moral of the story and cinematic climax to this remarkable journey, and a distillation of what they do best; an earnest, impassioned, and hard-fucking-rock anthem which sees them finally become 'the saviour of the broken, the beaten and the damned'. It's about making the most of every moment because after all, you never know when the parade (or whatever you'll see), will come to you. Pure Hollywood melodrama, but if you find the climactic refrain of 'I am not afraid to keep on living, I am not afraid to walk this world alone' cheesy, you're going to have given up sometime around track three anyway. For everyone else, it's proper, er, lump-in-throat time.
There's one little surprise left, but we laughed so hard that we won't spoil it for you, except to say that it once and for all disproves the accusation that this band are somehow humourless, as if the album hadn't done that anyway. 'The Black Parade' understands that real tragedy is inherently a bit funny, and vice versa, and it's that fact which sees them leave the jibbering bodies of a thousand emo jessies in their wake. The truth is they left that baggage behind long ago. If there's any parallel it's with somebody like Billy Corgan; not just because of the eerie similarity of Gerard's new hairdo, or even the marching band thing, but because both people have bigger imaginations than punk rock usually allows. But having been through their problems with drugs and psychosis already, MCR just seem too much of a finely-tuned juggernaut to fuck things up like the Pumpkins. This album has given them the freedom to do anything they want next, but for now this is one to file alongside 'American Idiot', 'Doolittle' and 'Nevermind' on your greatest US rock albums shelf. Oh yes, My Chemical Romance ' the moderately camp two-trick outsider's cult you thought you knew ' are dead alright. Long live My Chemical Romance, the outrageously-camp, loud and righteous new kings of the world. Those bottle-chucking haters are just going to have to get used to it.

Dude, you can not just "turn" emo. It is not some type of trend or something. It's an emotional sort of thing. Just because you listen to bands like the fall of troy or Chiodos, or you wear pipe jeans, a band shirt and eyeliner does not make you emo.By the way, the album is awesome.

Concept albums are cool, so I'll give them that, but it's still just depressing. And depressing can be good. Look at what the Flaming Lips did with "Do You Realize??"
Oh, and for the record, emo is a very stupid trend. You can go through an emotional state where you're very sad. I did, and for a few days, I thought that "Asleep" was one of the greatest songs ever. But yes, emo is a stupid trend for kids who want attention. And emo music is disturbingly fickle and vacuous. The Smiths work for a state of sadness, but they were also a good band and funny. MCR is down there on my list with Fallout Boy and the rest, except I would say MCR is ahead of the pack since they did try to do something with this record.
Alyssa123 wrote:
The first time I heard it, I didn't get what they were trying to do, but I gave it another chance: I sat down and actually paid attention to it rather than just having it on in the background while I did other things.
And it hit me like a flash of light: this is an incredible album.
If you're going to appreciate it for what it really is, you need to forget some things, if things like this are important to you: forget the fact they wear eyeliner. Forget the fact they started the black-shirt-red-tie-trend. Forget the fact that MTV like them. Forget the fact that lazy journalists call them emo because they can't think of a more accurate term.
Now you've got that over with, listen to it for what it is.
If you think this album is depressing, you totally don't get it. Yes, it's about death. But that doesn't mean it makes you slit your wrists: this album is incredibly positive because it's so honest: yes, it says, people die, and horrible things happen. But that's just the way the world is and we can get through it.
Anyone who finds that depressing is (no offence) too stupid to listen to music anyway.
Musically, every song is different and impressive in its own way. I won't go through each song and ruin it for you, but I have to say that "Mama" is one of the craziest, most brilliant, most experimental songs I've heard in a long time.
This album may not be for you. To be fair, this is NME's website and NME are mostly an indie magazine. If all you like is indie, and you like your music understated and melodic but maybe a little withdrawn, superficially cheerful and uplifting, then you're not going to like this.
If you can take a minute to get past the stereotypes, to really listen to what's being said and the ways in which MCR are saying it, if you don't mind a great big lump of theatrical melodrama, then this will be one of your favourite albums for life.
I'm not emo: my hair is, perhaps disappointingly, symmetrical, my jeans are baggy and I love Arctic Monkeys as much as the next NME reader.
But MCR do something that no other band in the world at the moment do: they make revolutionary music with stories of hope and honesty, and they make this music because it's what they want to do.
If you can't appreciate that, it's your loss.
But The Black Parade is the perfect way to show narrow minded haters - whether from bigoted newspapers or within the rock community - that MCR are a force to be reckoned with. This is an album that will stand the test of time because it is inimitable.
Long live The Black Parade.
If you let it into your heart, you'll never let it go.

Just listened to the stream on nme, and i have to say i am pretty impressed, the only thing that slightly puts me off it is the guys singing, iam not a big fan of that nasal sounding america vocal, but its not too bad and the music is really fucking huge, i think if you turned it up and had headphones on it would be amazing.
I dont really think you can class this music as Emo, and the way the guys in the band dress is more gothic anyway.

Good lord. on a bike. With a cherry on top. Not a single duff track - every single one grandiose and massively brilliant.
If you think it'll just be the usual "EMO" wank, you owe yourself to give this a listen.
This is a late contender for album of the year (after first listen). No actually - fu** it. it is album of the year, IMHO.
Could well be one the classic albums of the next few years. Only time will tell. One thing I do know - it'll be played to death by me this weekend. And next week. Then I'll come back and let you know my final thoughts.
This LP really is something else. It's the absolute bollocks - and I only gave it a listen so I could slag it off for being EMO shite, tbh. Don't even usually listen to bands with the "EMO" label if I was being blunt.
I'veNot heard any rock music so immediately consistently catchy, yet edgy in a long, long time. Did i mention how catchy this album is? Not a sentiment you'd usually associate with a concept album about death.
It's Queen at the most extravegently brilliant. It's AC/DC at the most rocking. It's Greenday at the top of their game ala American idiot. There's even an accoustic breakdown chucked in that reminds me of XTC.
Brace yourself - this lot are going global. I'll gar-un-dog-garn-tee it! I've heard the saying "stadium rock" chucked about many a time before and have never been at all partial to using it. But i'd use it as a compliment for this lot.
Try to forget the fact they're pretty boys with sylists and a big F/O record contract with a huge rumbling A&R juggernaught behind them. I can assure there's alot more to them than that.
If you don't agree, that's fine by me, but as I've tried to put across in this post - don't refuse to give the album a listen becuase of of who the band are.

In fact I've always found the whole emo-eye-liner-my-life's-shiter-than-your-life-shite a little annoying.
But that doesn't stop this being the most thrilling, powerful and tear-jerking album I've heard all year. In fact - possibly - since the turn of the century.
I'm still not sure why either.
Gerard Way's voice gets on my nerves and there a moments when the album is so self-righteously overblown that I wish they really had all been devoured by a phalanx of vampires.
However, that ignores the fact that the rest of it is possessed of an emotional depth that is beyond most mortals.
I didn't love you yesterday, but I certainly do know.

The album is good with some amazing songs but it dosnt compare to their last album. They should have stayed the way they were!

This is truly a magnificent album. I've been a fan of My Chemical Romance since the start, and I've seen how they've progressed. And, quite frankly, it's startling. The people who don't like it because it's not the same as "Three Cheers..." can get lost. They've moved forward so much, I don't find it surprising that they're going to be the biggest band in the world. Planet Earth is soon going to be My Chem's bitch, and the haters will have to live with that. Don't like it? Move to mars, or go deaf. Whatever, I couldn't care less.
And "indie legend", that was a very naive thing to say "I've recently turned emo and I don't like it" what? You don't have to be emo to like my chemical romance.
EMO is a shit trend you're right. But My Chemical Romance aren't EMO. So naahhhh.

When I watched them at Reading, they were shocking, the 'fans' didnt help to that. Because of this I narrow mindedly decided not to listen to 'Welcome to the black parade'. It was a stand, i decided to boycott it, until i heard it and left it on.....the song was amazing, and i was kind of stunned. Then i listened to the album on NME, and it is one of the best albums i have heard of late. I can not pick out a song that i dislike on that album, and it is full of quality songs. Now I have to say I've been a big My Chemical Romance fan since the release of 'Three Cheers' and have been eagerly waiting for this album. When 'Welcome to the Black Parade' was released it only heightened my anticipation as it seemed the new direction was right down my alley.
I'm 24 and I'll tell you this. All you EMO kids will not like it, and I'll guess most of the reviews above are done by kids or by people who just don't get it. This album is one of the most beautiful rock opera albums since the great 'A Night at the Opera' by the legendary Queen. It combines a number of different styles and it pulls it off so well nearly all the way through.
From the opening track 'The End', which melts so smoothly into 'Dead!' it starts as it means to go on, with the essence of the old MCR there, but with a new style which is so much more grown up and I'd have to say going for world domination, rather than please a few nutty kids who like to go mad at gigs. It's the middle of the album where the new sound is so evident though. 'Welcome to the Black Parade' has been played to death everywhere but it still sounds new and fresh, after that 'I Don't Love You' is about as close to a melodic ballad as you'll get from MCR and it sounds great from the piano intro to the build up and release of some fantastic melodies. The slight studio effect on Gerard's voice though in this track can be unoticable, but it may affect them doing it live. Onto 'Mama' and it's a single waiting to explode, 'IF' they take a chance. A really upbeat sound, with downbeat lyrics make it an anthem, and so much different to the usual EMO rubbish we see from most bands these days. 'Cancer' is a song you'll love, or hate. I'm not sure, it's lyrics are fantastic, and it's a great song that will touch home with many people, however the afore mentioned lyrics can get a little cheesy at times, I mean 'Soggy from the chemo' just doesn't do it for me. None the less a great addition to the album, just not a true great as the band and many fans so far have made out. The last song I'll mention on it's own is 'Teenagers' which you have to listen to the words to. It's so upbeat and catchy, yet has a deep, underlying meaning that can be missed.
Overall I don't think I've bought a better 'new' album since I've been on this planet. Some of the old rock opera stuff from Queen, and dare I say Meat Loaf does blow it out of the water at times, but no one in modern times can compare to this. It's a more grown up sound and even if you don't like it, this album could conquer new ground for MCR and will bring in a whole new bunch of fans. I've already seen a lot of older people take note of them, and this is what MCR need to get where they belong. On top of the world!

pitful crap that, as indie legend correctly said, sounds like a queen tribute band. I have had the extreme unpleasantness of listening to this album almost everyday, as my irritating emo sister owns it, and i can rightfully say that they have not moved on from emo at all, Gerard Way has simply bleached his hair and asked his band to throw on couple of halloween costumes that cost about three quid.
A laughable excuse for an album, that is somehow worst than than their last.

This isn't really the kind of thing I'd usually pick up, but the single was - I thought - pretty catchy. The album really surprised me - it's an enjoyable pop record in the mould of A Night At The Opera. Kind of like Queen walking into bits of Muse and Greenday.
So the carefully-crafted indie kids will hate it without probably even listening to it. Who cares? Leave 'em to spend their time worrying about whatever polution threat Thom Yorke decides to babble on about next, or discuss the meaning of the next Mars Volta album in depth (oh, for those who care, I own and enjoy both The Eraser and Amputechture) and just listen to whatever the heck you want without worrying what the kid with the retro military jacket and Libertines badges will think. Some will love it, some will hate it. At the end of the day, the only opinion worth caring about is your own.

The main reviewer's right, miserable times are often ridiculous too - and that's why I've liked MCR since hearing their first album (despite the looks of pity when I tell people). That cheery "I think I'll blow my brains against the ceiling" to a jaunty beat always makes me laugh. Real life is about misery and joy and reconciling the two and this is an album in that spirit, a kind of "OH WHAT THE F**CK ELSE CAN GO WRONG??" with the sound of laughter and clinking glasses mixing with gunfire and weeping. It's like a much lighter version of The Holy Bible - less concentration camps and anorexia, but still powerfully nihilistic and brave at the same time. Sure, it's rock opera, but that doesn't make it disposible - not in a world where Razorlight gets to number one and where Kasabian are listened to at all. I dislike the emo term and all that goes with it, but newspapers do like a genre - ignore what you think you're meant to like and give it a try.

Yes, Pink Floyd sang about mothers, war etc. As have 1000s of other bands. Does that need to detract from MCR? The Black Parade is a fantastic album. It may not be 100% original but what is? Surely the fact that you're comparing it to a classic like The Wall speaks volumes. And it's head-and-shoulders above a lot of the other dross in the music world in general and rock world in particular.
And, craigfoley, firstly I agree that MCR can't really be categorised as emo anymore - I think TBP has changed that. But more importantly, no - emo isn't an excuse for closet gay guys to wear make-up and act like women. It's a form of expression that appeals to a particular audience - much like any other genre. And to suggest that being gay (closeted or otherwise) means wanting to wear make-up and behave like a woman is grossly narrow minded and, frankly, fucking infantile.

I personally was overall quite unimpressed by the previous album and had the opinion that MCR were very over-rated...All style and no content. I really wasn't expecting to like this album at all, in fact i only listened to it out of boredom....but i'm so glad that i did.
The extent to which the band have grown as musicians and artists in general since the last album is incredible. The guitars just sound perfect on this album, raw and yet nicely produced without over-doing it. There's just a real maturity and swagger about the approach to their song writing now. Yes fine, its all a bit camp and as the review points out, it would be quite at home on a west end stage but in a way that's the beauty of it. I found everything about this album a refreshing change to the endless mod/indie bands about at the minute. I mean come on..... you were never meant to take this album seriously, liza minelli makes a guest appearance for god sake. MCR had their tongues firmly in their cheeks when they wrote this album. Its sarcastic, humourous, dark and everything in between.
It does have very obvious rip-offs from bohemian rhapsody etc and for that it drops a couple of points but they definitely pull it off. Its all very commercial sounding but if this is a sign of things to come then MCR will dominate this genre for years to come.
The Killers 'Sams Town' massively disappointed me but i expected nothing from this album and it blew me away. Rock album of the year so far by quite a distance.

the first five tracks pass you by until track6 where it picks up and some of the best rock i'v heard since nirvana comes out!
The drumming and the guitar playing drives the album, gerard kinda passes ya by. and lyrics are shoddy but the sound is amazing.
too many people will reject this because of their past beliefs on mcr, but if you listen to it and forget them its like listening to something completly different.
A triumph of an album, just drop the emo crap and enjoy rock

Don't get me wrong, I've loved them all along, but I think it's realy cool that they're experimenting (I spelled that wrong, I know..) with old school Queen, and Green Day punk, and psychedelia Muse. Love the album! They're my boys!<3

I don't understand some of these reviews...... Do you guys actually listen to the albums when you give them 1/10 and slag them off? Or is it just a bit of fun for you? Fair enough if you have some constructive criticism then say it and then give it a proper rating that will help other music buyers decide whether they want to buy it. There is virtually no album on earth that is worth only 1/10. If this is not your sort of music then don't review it.
The album has a good range of styles and borrows from lots of other artists but then today, what album doesn't? Some of the lyrics are amazing and heartbreaking and the pace of the album is perfect. Overall very good effort and shows good development from the band from their previous work.

The album is great. They borrow all sorts of styles with some twists of opera and classic rock but still portray an overall great rock/punk sound. And although other people who have reviewed earlier say this has been done before, when in the last 20 years has anything like this been done. Buy the album, it's worth it.
And, I just want to say to all you haters, GET OVER IT!!!!! Why, when someone is proclaimed to be in a genre, do they have to strictly adhere to it? This album is great. And to all the people who shut their ears because they are ignorant, arrogant and hate anything new, you are missing out on great music. But good for you!! I can't even tell when there's a chorus or not. Though in 'Three Cheers' I liked the unpredictablility of it. I don't think that this is going to be much of a hit for me though and nor to the original hardcore My Chemical Romance fans who stuck by them with emo only to be ditched. P.S. But after the much awaited release of "Welcome to the Black Parade", I was shocked to see in fact a chav, on a bus singing along to this amazing song on their phones. So My Chemical Romance, not only have you attracted your loyal fans, but looks like you have made some new ones!
Personally I love the new song and album, it has a whole new look to it on the surface, but still has that rock/punk sound we all love! The operatic and more classic sounds remind me of Queen, an amazing twist to an amaing band. Keep it up

I am so glad I did. It's such a great album. I'm really glad they've moved away from their old stuff, because now I've got another amazing album I can listen to day in, day out. Teenagers especially is such a stand out.
Emo is a trend, but if they keep transforming themselves this way, MCR will be around for a while yet.

I canot find even a minor fault with a single track and having played it extensively over the last three weeks I have been given the opportunity to dissect each track in detail.
I couldn't care less if they are EMO or not. If a lazy music journalist's label stops your bigoted self from discovering a fantastic landmark album then it's your funeral and not "the patient's".

Since my post somewhere up there ^^^^ I have bought their other two albums, obsessed over them shamelessly, listened to the entire Black Parade (besides 'Blood', track 14) and started to convert one of my friends to MCR and another friend (who is/was a girly-girl stereotype) to Panic! At The Disco. Iknow can compare this to their other stuff and I have to say, this is an amazing new album from an amazing band. I can find simmilarites in the songs, which may be the most vague things ever, but I think they're there. For example, 'Headfirst For Halos' is a lot like 'Dead!' from the new album. I could be imagining this though. Ihave to say, due to it being overplayed and me hearing MCR's other stuff, I am now incabable of listening to 'Welcome To The Black Parade', I think it has been worked into my brain far too often and the begining is too errr....flimsy. It lacks edge and it sounds like Gerard Way's voice has gone slightly like a cross between Micheal Jackson and Justin Timberlake in the old days of 'Cry Me A River'!! Once I have got past that begining, into the 'screamo' bit I'm fine, and it is a great song, but that begining really annoys me. Altogether an amazing concept album/rock opera. Keep up the good work!

Personally, I think it's one of the best albums that's been released in a while. It's always nice to come across an album that you aren't skipping through and just abusing one or two songs until you're sick of it a week later. Every track is strong in it's own unique way, but it still works well as a package, which is part of what makes it so great. Gerard's vocals are as effective and interesting as ever, and the musicianship throughout the entire album simply blew me away.

I Don't Love You is a song that touches your soul and makes you feel something, which is what music is all about. In fact every single track is emotionally charged and undoubtedly it has blown many of their critics away with its ambitious premise and brilliant execution. Gerard is indeed the saviour of the broken. I was a fan of theirs from the moment I heard the soaring chorus of Helena and now the band is staring down unbelieveable mainstream success, which they bloody deserve. And only people who don't know what punk is would call MCR punk!!!! Punk is my favorite genre, but I LOVE MCR TOO!!!!!
F*** emo. WTF is emo anyway. I'm 34 so I guess I would not know but if you are talking about depressed people let me remind you that Ozzy was depressed and so was Alice Cooper. They were ferociously hated by ALOT of people once upon a time. I could name more but I would be gettng off the subject.
People with mediocre taste never like anything that is new and different. Also, MCR is making some people uncomfortable because they have something REAL to say!! That is a very good thing!!!!! That is why they caught my attention in the first place. What do you think punk did in the begining? And Hip hop? The way people react to them proves that the are significant and vital. If they did not shake people up then the people who do not like MCR would not hate them so strongly, they would just ignore MCR. You know like how every one does with Hinder and Lindsay Lohan.
The fact that MCR has such a huge and devoted following and also a group of people who truly hate them means that MCR is doing something right. If MCR made EVERYBODY happy then they would be indistinguishable and meaningless just like everyone else.

I love all three MCR albums as they are all so different, the lyrics are so meaningful and carry a message to me and many others (the hugely devoted fanbase demonstrates this) - the music is simply AMAZING.
Not only do the band create great music on CD; I watched them live last week at Wembley arena on the 29th and words cannot describe how fantastic it was. Alright, firstly i would like to offer my congratulations on a very well written review- the opener scared the living shit out of me. next i want to express concern for the obviously MENTALLY DISABLED people who have commented at some points above saying the album was crap. WAKE UP! You need help if u dont at least see that MCR's latest offer has made them shoe-ins for the title of LEGENDARY. This album's amazing range, versatility and creativity cements them a place next to the likes of Queen.
Gerard's lyrics and vocals bring so much to the album which already has a lot to offer. Even without words, the songs have the ability to speak to people. The guitarists get better every time an album comes out (especially frank who is far from the 5 chord wonder punk he once was- our little baby's playing solos now!!!) and the imagery and artistic involvement of the band in all aspects of their music just takes MCR to a whole new level.
It is true in a way that MCR have died, but only to rise as a better band. In conclusion i would like to quote this eerie premonition of Gerard himself from an interview whilst touring with "3 cheers..." (their second album):
"Sometimes you gotta die on the inside to rise from your own ashes and become a better person..."
spooky but true...

I used to hate MCR until I heard this album. This album is genius. Just because the lyrics do not sugarcoat the idea of death, it does not mean it's depressing. At points, 'the patient' seems quite optimistic about death, at the same time as regretful. And if it is depressing, so what? People don't necessarily listen to music to feel good, they listen to music to feel. If you listen to sad music you're supposed to feel sad, and if you do, they're successful. Before, in MCR, what was missing was, first of all, a clear tone where you can distinguish instruments from each other, which they have on this album. Second, perfect levels where you can hear the leading instrument well. Third, the band was not only emo, but they were trying so hard to be emo, the songs were not EMOTIONAL, they were WHINY, and made me feel nothing. Now, Gerrard's voice is full of intense feelings that really reflect the lyrics and it's so passionate it makes my head spin I could listen to this over and over again and not get sick of it. Fourth, the old drummer SUCKED. My god, they've finally kicked him out and got a jazz trained drummer who is much above average. For a mainstream drummer, he is amazing. And lastly, they have always had an AMAZING lead guitarist, and I've never understood why he didn't get solos. He finally gets what seems like more creative freedom, or it's just the band finally embracing his talent, he gets more solos and it's amazing. This is an incredible album and I hope the next one is just as awesome.

You know what? I hate their first couple of albums. Musically unprofficient, lazy crap. But, this, is genius work. It's brilliant, honest, beautiful, heartbreaking, amazing, incredible, and this is coming from the guy who was cursing their name and yelling at their fans the last time they were in his city. You don't know how wrong I feel I am for that because I had no idea they had become this amazing. They are an incredible band, and just because Gerrard doesn't yell the words it doesn't mean he lack charisma. It means he's learned to sing.
