Every month in Comics and Cartoons, we are asking professionals to answer some questions asked by the aspiring comic artist or writer. Since there is never a single correct answer, several people are polled and their answers are compiled into one article, providing insight from different angles.
We challenge writers and artists to self publish new material for this week, and offer it to their local stores. We ask for retailers to take this as an opportunity to showcase local independent talent on the new release shelves. We encourage fans to break from their buying habits and try something new.
It's not all that often that the inkers of comics and cartoons get much appreciation. The common misconception is that all inking involves is tracing, when that is not the case. Inking involves much more than just tracing over pencils; it requires a thorough understanding of visual mechanics, and it takes a lot of skill and patience to master. Hopefully through this feature, you'll gain an understanding and an appreciation for the art of cartoon and comic inking.
One of the things that an inker must be able to do is to find the mistakes of the penciler and fix them accordingly, or make adjustments when needed. What the readers will see is the inks, not the pencils, so the inker has to be on his or her game when inking the work of someone else.

As one of the people who (regrettably) does his own inking, I can appreciate a good ink. When I ink my pencils I generally fail to capture the essence of the pencil work (and lets face it, not everybody leaves the most ink ready pencils). I've seen some amazing ink which improves on the lines and contrast and some which perfectly captures the pencils making it as if the original artist penciled in ink. Either way, it's not as easy as it looks. Plus it's hard for a lot of people since most of the "fun" stuff is already done and not always with the ink in mind. I have only respect for professional inkers.

True, nobody thinks of letterers (I generally forget they exist until I start working on non serial comics). I wish I knew of good western examples of the Japanese style of sound effects. They use lettering to give an sound element which western comics Just don't seem to have (like using lined letters rather than just shapes to give a sweeping sword a more audible element, or giving the reader a cue to think of the sound of a character running). If there were a good comic or how to book with condenses a wide variety of sound effect techniques from world sequential art I'd own it in a heartbeat. Because I can't imaging the cool sound effects in English.
