Canon today announced the long awaited, and heavily rumoured, upgrades to it's full frame professional body, the 1Ds II, and it's prosumer flagship, the 30D.

The 1Ds III will become the highest resolution 35mm DSLR on the market, sporting a rather substantial 21.1mp. It retains many of it's predecessors features and inherits new functions from Canon's current range, including LiveView, dual image processors and built in sensor cleaning. The buffer size has been increased to a usable 56 frames and it also features the new sRaw mode where it captures a limited (5.6mp) file size in Raw format.

The 40D follows on where the 30D left off and sports some predictable features, such as a 3" screen and integrated sensor cleaning, as well as a few surprises, the most noticeable being the increased frame rate of 6.5fps. The 10.1mp body is due to ship in September.

Along with the new bodies Canon also announced 3 new lenses. Top of the pile is an updated 14mm f/2.8 L wide angle lens. It's been designed to compliment the new 1Ds III so expect the new lens to be high resolving and sharp corner to corner. Along with this is a long overdue update to their standard kit lens, the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6. The new version has Image Stabilization and is joined by a 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS lens. They are expected to ship in October 2007 with the 55-250mm only available outside the US and Canada initially.
