Andrei Pavel

does something a little different in the line of traditional art, in that his work is on cars, motorbikes, and the human body - a growing trend, but nevertheless an interesting one that requires precision and skill. He also does painting on canvas, but his main tool is that of an airbrush, which brings out some extraordinary shadings, definitions, sense of depth, and other varying effects to his work. We decided it would be great to find out more about this particular artform, and we're pleased to put in print an interview with Andrei below.
The Interview
1. How long have you been doing art?
I've started in '97 with tatoo drawings. The guys that were tatooing came to ask me to make drawings from magazines. After that, in 98 i started to do my own tattoo drawings. In 2001 i had my first ideas of paintings and drawings and put them in my artwork.
As a kid I was painting all day long

and in the 7th grade i did the works for my all class for an entire year. But nothing serious...
2. What, or who, got you started and influenced your work?
At first... from the poetry I write and my dreams. But a few years ago I found Dali.
3. Do you have any formal training as an artist?
Myself.
4. What software do you normally use for preparing a work for display on the internet?
Photoshop CS2
5. Do you have a preference for the type of picture you like to create?
Distorted reality
6. Can you give a brief overview of the various techniques you use (particularly with regards your airburshing - what's actually involved)?
I do traditional stuff... with pencils and brushes, sometimes combined. Nothing special...
The airbrush involves a compressor, which has a hose that goes in the airbrush gun. The presure goes in a little tank filled with paint (any colour we wish). The techniques are many. The most interesting thing about the airbrush is that we can work with stencils. A simple stencil or we can work with layers. So, the airbrush can make sharp edges and lines but also shading or fog. It's all about the idea we have. I worked with the airbrush on canvas and paper too, but I do most of it on motorcycles and cars. It`s more difficult because of the shapes and finding the model of the piece.
I promise to give more details with examples on pictures soon.
7. What sort of things inspire your artwork?
It comes from nowhere. I just have ideas.
8. Do you have any advice for aspiring artists?
I'm not that good to give advice, but i surely can say this.: practice and keep working. Never give up and believe in your work (even your world if I may say).
9. Do you have any future plans for diversifying your artwork?
I just want to work some more canvas, cause i have so many ideas but had no time. So... as an answer... i'll finally do artwork. Complexity and harmony of the image.
10.Is there anything else you'd like to add about what you do? (Feel free to give links etc. where appropriate!)
I'm also tattooing, creating music and writing poetry (in romanian cause it's not easy translating and keeping the meaning of the text).
Here are some interesting examples from Andrei's gallery
