Every 18 seconds, someone dies of suicide...
It's a horrible statistic. What's even worse is that many of those deaths could have been prevented with a little knowledge and a little love. There Is Hope!, a group raising awareness about suicide and suicide prevention, is holding its second annual walk/run to raise money and exposure.
There Is Hope! is located in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, in the United States. That is also where I live. Our county ranks in the top 5 in the state for deaths by suicide. And I am going to help change that.
Like the Weekend for breast cancer, I am taking part in activities to help this organization. On September 22, there will be a walk/run. (I am mailng in my registration tomorrow.) I have been spreading the word around my community, and hope to raise some great money for the cause.
How can you help? Well, there are a few ways. If you live in or near Sheboygan county, feel free to join the walk/run! The entry fee is a mere $25, and all money donated is kept in the area. If you are not in the area, think about donating. See the organization's website, linked to at the end of the article, for details on donating.
I Run For... I remember reading about a deviant who was taking part in a walk/run for breast cancer. They planned on covering their shirt with papers with the names of breast cancer vistims and survivors. I will do the same thing. If you know someone who has committed or attempted suicide, Note me with their name. My plan is to write all of the names over my arms and legs before the run.
Please help! Suicide is an easily preventable death, if only we paid attention!

I wish I could donate, but instead, I'll just have to root you on.

The only way to actually prevent suicides is to provide concrete help to the suicidal people. That doesn't mean imprisoning them in a hospital for so called "help". That means giving them the kind of help they need. Over half of the people who commit suicide suffer from a physical illness. If they had got better treatment (and/or pain relief), the suicide would not have happened. Some people commit suicide because of lack of money, loneliness, debt or such reasons. You cannot remedy those problems by any campaigns, you need to actually help the people.
Sadly, hardly anyone's actually willing to do that. It's easier to speak than to act. Claims like "Suicide is an easily preventable death, if only we paid attention!" are nothing but repugnant bullshit. Do something, not just pay attention. And that still isn't in any way "easy". All suicides are not preventable. That's a fact we just have to live with. Suicide is a basic human right and physically intervening with someone's suicide is a violation of their most basic freedom.
but it's worth a try!
