I've noticed that a great part of the Self-Portraits I like in deviantART comes from photography classes students whose Self-Portraits were class assignments. There must be a reason for that, don't you think? So, I did a research and I quickly found out an assignment page that begun with a beautiful and inspiring paragraph, that I'll be quoting:
"The self portrait has captivated artists and photographers for centurieswith good reason. In making a self portrait, you become, simultaneously, the subject and the object, the creator and the creation, the hunter and the hunted. Certainly, many artists have practiced it for self promotion and self aggrandizement. But self portraiture can also be a tool for introspection and self exploration. Of course, it may simply be a record of your physical appearance at a given time and place, if such a thing as a simple record is possible."

I believe Self-Portraits aren't just something photographers do in the beginning due to a lack of models - although it can happen. One of the proofs for my assumption is the so many Self-Portrait we have around the world and through time! In the same research I found out some interesting sites about this genre's history. I encourage you to do the same!

Madeleine-dA is one of our newest collaborators and in her first note she wrote something that made me smile. I've asked her for permission to post her words and she said yes:
"
At the moment I am just a passer-by lending a helping hand. I like your project and I think it really comes at the right time - when people seem to think that the self-portraits gallery is a replacement for myspace photo gallery. Showing people the beauty and marvel of self-portraits might help fight this idiotic idea that deviantART is turning into myspace."

"
All of these artists gazed into their mirrors and attempted to grasp their identities. They sought to portray their image, whether it showed a clear representation of their features, a walk through their childhood or an outpouring of emotions. Some self-portraits show only what the artist wants us to see, some chronicle the history of the artist, others reveal personal secrets and a sense of isolation. Whichever method is employed each artist took a long literal and figurative look at him/herself. Each portrait is a an exploration of the self." (Font:

"No! this face is only a mask, a wicked ornament,
illuminated by an exquisite grimace,
Look and see, atrociously contorted,
The real head, and the sincere face
Turned back under the shadow of the face which lies"

this is the best way to combat the influx of cruddy high angle too-high contrast self portraits that have been publicy decried lately: by showing the right way to do a self portrait!
