September is the official month for Ovarian Cancer Awareness, and for something that is the 4th leading cancer death among women in the US, it is sadly overlooked. After all, how many people know how common it is, or how many women a year it kills? (16,000) How many people know its official color without looking it up? (It's teal.)
This month, I would like to start a Teal Ribbon Campaign to increase Ovarian Cancer Awareness in the world, even if it's just the digital world. Create something teal to spread the word, and at least the information will be out there a little bit more. Even if you don't do that, at least use the journal stamps to link back to this article. It's a passive way to spread the word.
Here are some facts about Ovarian Cancer, and a couple of links for websites to go to if you'd like more information or a list of symptoms.
Ovarian Cancer is the 4th leading cause of cancer death among women in the US. In fact, it has the highest mortality of all cancers of the female reproductive system.
Ovarian Cancer occurs in 1 in 57 women.
More than 16,000 women will die this year from Ovarian Cancer. Another 25,000 will be diagnosed.
If Ovarian Cancer is caught early, before it spreads out of the ovaries, 90% of the women infected will survive 5 years.
When diagnosed after the Ovarian Cancer has spread, the chance of 5-year survival drops to less than 25%.
Only 24% of Ovarian Cancer is caught early.
There is no reliable screening test for the early detection of Ovarian Cancer.
