CEA Update for September 5, 2007

$realitysquared:iconrealitysquared: reports, Sep 5, 2007
UPDATES FROM $realitysquared : Spamming and Scams.

This week I’d like to point out a troublesome onsite trend which has affected many people and which we are working diligently to end.

As many users have noticed a large number of accounts have been created lately which either comment on user pages, deviations or send notes to hundreds or even thousands of deviants seemingly at random.

The contents of these comments and notes read approximately as follows:

OMG! you're a GENIUS! Why don't you join the poetry contest from [link] ? Free to enter, 100k prizes. You MUST win it!

The [link] is typically a “tinyurl” which disguises the true destination of the hyperlink.

If you receive a comment or a note which contains this phrase please do not click the link as they have proven to be malicious destinations (viruses), outright scams or simply annoying advertisements.

Please file a helpdesk report if you receive a comment or note containing that pasted phrase, but only if less than 24 hours has passed since you received it. These accounts are typically banned quickly so please don’t report if you notice the magical ! has appeared in front of the name. Also please do not be surprised if we do not give you a personal response to your report, we receive a large enough volume where only the first few will be personally handled while the later ones will simply be marked ‘Resolved’ without comment.

These instances are highly annoying for everyone and we are now taking more extreme measures to handling them and keeping these trolls off of deviantART.

So it's actually a good thing that I checked the "deviant"'s profile before I attempted to click his damn link...

The note that was sent to me yesterday contained that exact message. Darn it, Now even dA is not safe from these A-holes...

Great job on banning their arses here! :salute:

lol I received that same the other day! I found it humorous for I don't even write poetry and knew that it was a scam, but never realized the extent of the situation. Great job in catching that!

Oh wow, I thought it was just one person going round trying to sign people up to poetry.com, i had no idea there were others being sent round with other links. What a waste of dA resources  Guess I'm just lucky I only got the poetry.com one. The thing about tinyurl is that its useful to stop links breaking but sucks that it can be used to cover up harmful sites. Still, any friendly seeming url could be full of viruses.

Thanks for letting everyone know :aww:

Thanks for the warning
I got one along time ago--but my experience with Poetry.com assisted me in kissing it off!

I received on of those several weeks ago, but by the time I went to check out their user page, they had been banned. I did not click on the link they gave. They have posted over 2000 comments is just a few hours.

Very well said! In my opinion, I believe that people who use a script to send spam to up thousands of other deviants is seen as a exploit of the system.

I also personally believe that with this recent bot-related spamming is being compared to the infamous Wordpress spambots who have been using random names to spam [link] at various oekaki and other bulletin board systems where either registration is not required or where guest commenting is enabled.

In order to reduce the spamming, I believe that an image filtering system called CAPTCHA (Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart) would be used and randomly coloured upper/lowercase letters and numbers on a distorted image would be required in order for the registration of a new deviant to be completed.
