CYBER STALKING

=mimulux:iconmimulux: reports, September 7, 2007
Having a good and dear friend here on the internet being stalked for months now I decided to do a bit of research on the net about stalkers. I was quite shocked to see the amount of info there is on this subject.. this obviously meaning that it is quite a problem already.

I will publish a few of the links I gathered here on the net at the end of this article, but would like to quote from [link] what it says there in particular about internet stalkers – or rather their profile.

Quote

Internet stalking
The Internet offers new opportunities for stalking, hence the term cyber stalking. The cyberstalker can, from the safety of his or her home, or the anonymity of an office environment, trace, track and find out personal details of the target, including address, phone number, and more sinisterly, addresses and details of the target's family. The Internet also offers unlimited opportunity to befriend lonely, vulnerable and nice people who can be persuaded to start a relationship. Most people do not recognise the symptoms of stalking and the techniques a stalker employs to target them.
Internet stalker profile (and any stalker, especially a male)
If you've been wooed by a cyberstalker, this profile will bring you back to reality:
• lives in a 1-room apartment which hasn't been cleaned for months - if ever
• has stacks of pornographic magazines in his bedroom area
• has poor personal hygiene
• has poor table manners
• has poor social etiquette
• hasn't changed the sheets on his bed for months, which are now best described as crusty
• has a bathroom, the state of which doesn't bear thinking about
• lives on pizza and beer/coke, the remnants of which litter his apartment
• may have an unusual pet (eg ferret) which has free run of the apartment
• is either significantly over- or under-weight
• has a small moustache or other facial hair
• has not held down any job for more than a couple of years, probably less
• has no friends
• has no life outside the Internet
The Internet stalker probably has other unpleasant characteristics that sexual harassers possess, and the usual sexual inadequacy including lack of intimacy, controlling behaviour, no concept of the partner's needs, premature ejaculation, and an abnormal belief bordering on obsession in his smallness.
Unquote

I don’t know about the legal aspect of this problem here on dA. I have no idea what dA can do or not if one of its members is being harassed by such a stalker. One thing I do know though is that people who are being harassed by such sickos need our support. We as a community – even if it is huge and it is not possible to know each member – should back up our friends and co-dA-ers who have or had the misfortune to become the target of such a cyber stalker. I personally think that a list of stalkers should be published on dA so that people can be forewarned. Of course I know that these stalkers can and will change their names in a jiffy if necessary. Nevertheless by bringing them out into the public view we are sending out two signals..
a) to the victims by showing them our support and and love – and saying YOU ARE NOT ALONE IN THIS
and
b) to the stalker showing him/her – we KNOW you, we WATCH you.

It is imperative that the victims speak out and it is imperative that we, their friends show that we care. One of the goals of the stalker is to terrorize his victim, to isolate her/him, to make her/him feel alone, insecure, afraid. By standing by our friends we can at least try to prevent for the victim to fall into isolation! And DON’T just say.. ‘go away and leave me alone’.. this could happen to any of us and you might be the next victim who needs help from friends, family and community members!

This is all I can say at the moment. Please go to our community member and friend :iconpeace-of-art: and show her your love and support – and that you CARE!

Thank you!

mimulux

a friend of mine has been harassed in a way, fortunately not directly as that stalker coming to her home (stalker, who is apparently female lives apparently in a faraway country) but that person followes her to all her sites, including dA (that matter was reslved some time ago by banning all the account stalker had, and as far as i know did not come back), then on myspace, her e-mails, etc. stalker even found e-mails of some of her friends, or people she worked with, and sent them mails pretending to be her...like stalker was trying to assume her identity only online. quite an unpleasant stuff, and i hope stalker gave up as i heard no new stories but...
she's not the only one, and the biggest problems are that really all personal data may be accessible. i even heard that american government (or some of US states) had copies had copies of drivers licenses online so they were misused. also heard they had all passports numbers online, not only of US citizens. now, don't know if it's true, but if it is, who gives you the right to publish it? there were ID thefts in such big countries, would be harder to do it here though.
another thing is if person leaves data on suspicious pages, and many are gullable, but still...
and, dA policy is that you may not name anyone in public - otherwise you risk yourelf being banned. the only proper method is to report harassment and the staff deals with it asap. too many of us, and sometimes difficult to quickly see what's up so be careful about naming names...and people that do harass others are banned permanently so no use in publishing their "names" as if they wish, they'd reappear under a different name and there's nothing dA can do about it. but we can support people being harassed and report each harassment. good thing is that you have a block list that i was reluctant to use though it comes in very handy.
you do have my support here, i know what it's like to be harassed :hmm:

thanks for your reply.. yes i know dA bans the accounts. that is a small help.. i believe there could be done more but.. who am i to say. i don't run this community.

what i just think is important is for the victims to know that they are not alone. this feeling of isolation is the worst... and by keeping quiet about it.. the isolation grows.

now.. somebody said to me.. but by going public you are giving the stalker attention and that is what he/she wants. yes.. to a certain extent this is true.. BUT.. the stalker does not really want negative attention.. cause if it is negative it means he/she has blundered, made mistakes, has been found out.. and most stalkers consider themselves perfect. they don't make mistakes.. it's the others who make them. so negative publicity shows to all and one... he/she is far from perfect.

as to this list.. if dA does not permit names to be mentioned... then it could be done outside dA.. with proper links or whatever.... just an idea..

thanks for your reply

Now, I understand that internet stalking is very, very serious business, so please don't take my following comments as folly, but I've got some qualms about this.

I'm sorry but this description here fits most of my gamer friends, and the majority of them aren't interested in anything except their DPS and the Raid that night. I'm not saying that some stalkers COULD fall into this category, but having been stalked myself I find it very important to mention that this is a very, very loose description that could fit just about anyone.

Internet stalkers are just like real life stalkers they can be anyone, they've just got a very, very odd obsession with someone, or something and typically need some professional help.

Anyway, internet stalking is why it's very important to be stingy with your information anywhere, even offline. Very informative article otherwise, and good luck.

i got this information from one of the help pages i was on. that is why i added the quote-unquote to it. stalkers do have a certain profile and even if you say most of your gamer friends could fit into it - really ?? ;) - there is something different about them.. different in the sense that they are NOT stalkers. there is that one characteristic missing that makes them into stalkers.

i agree also that a stalker needs professional help... BUT.. lets think of the vicitms first .. ok?

thanks for your reply

Lol My husband falls into this category except the one room apartment (lol and the beer, nasty). I know loads of people that, without their spouses/significant others would totally fall into this description, and some of them do anyway. And I'm in no way saying that the stalker's mental health should come before the victims, I'm just relating the fact that it would seem the majority of stalkers could be classified as clinically insane (I'm just trying to put it in a nicer way than saying their nuts :P).

Anyway, yeah, I don't think that this description really does justice to any group of people, it's like describing all pedophiles as men who typically dress well, are very nice, and often are outgoing and social... Now, I'm stretching it a little, but I actually saw a video (taped in the 1950's of course) that went something like that.

But yeah, anyway, I'm done rambling :P

haha.. well my husband might also fit into that category  ... i read this description on that particular page and my reaction was similar to yours... what the heck. but then i started thinking and realized.. if I were the stalker and was reading this..... well i would not like what i was reading here... i think there is a reason for them publishing it. so...... that is why i also added it to my article. it certainly deflates the stalker wouldn't you think? takes away some of his ';power'...

and of course they are clinically insane... there is no doubt about that. i fully agree with you!

I think Mark phrased it well, in any community there are good and bad people, and online you need to be as cautious if not more so. Most of the time a cyber stalker has other problems, many of which could put them into a category of danger to society. This one not only has the desire to hurt and attack women, but seems to have a thing for small children, as he's placed pics of some in his galleries and called them names as well. When a grown man does this, the public should be well aware that he's not normal.
